Every child does things that leave us scratching our heads and asking ourselves, “Why?” In Why is My Kid Doing That? you will learn that the answer is often found when we peel back the layers and take a closer look at the child’s sensory system. Author Cindy Utzinger OTR/L breaks down sensory processing into easy to understand language and explains how to use a sensory approach to help our children successfully gain motor skills and emotional and behavioral regulation. Every child will benefit from a strong sensory foundation. With an understanding of ’why’ and the knowledge of how to help, parents and educators are empowered to raise confident and successful children.
I would highly recommend this book for parents, teachers, and any professional who works with young children! This book did a great job explaining the foundations of reflex integration, sensory regulation, and behavior in a way that anyone could understand. It helps me, a school-based occupational therapist, understand how to properly incorporate sensory based interventions that are so beneficial to kids who need extra help (and even those who don’t). I will definitely recommend it as a resource for anyone else wanting to learn more about this topic!
As a teacher and a parent, I found this book to be really eye opening. As Cindy discussed different behaviors, I could picture my own kids or my students engaging in them. Going forward, I now have a better understanding of why they are doing it and activities that I can engage them in to support them as a whole person.
