I wish that I could say that “Seaside Quilts: Quilting, Sewing, & Craft Projects for Beach-Inspired Décor,” by Carol C. Porter and Rebecca J. Hansen is a wonderful book. But I can’t because it’s not. If you’re either new to quilting or looking for a quilting book just for inspiration, I encourage you to pick up some other book.

I’m not trying to be rude or hateful, but as someone who’s read a **lot** of quilting books, this is just so far below the bar. Color is a big part of quilting, no doubt—from the front, to the back, to the binding and the thread. But instead of just talking about it briefly, the authors provide eleven pages of oceanside pictures with accompanying color charts—that’s all. Then they follow this with several pages of “ocean themed” old quilt blocks that are only included because their names have something “oceany” in the name. But the worst was still yet to come.

The “Seaside Inspiration for Quilters” section looked more like a paint catalog than a quilting book. The authors took readers on a room-by-room tour of a house. Some of the pictures didn’t even include quilts in them. The pictures that **did** feature quilts didn’t focus on them. Instead, they were just part of the scenery. What stood out the most? The paint on the walls.

Numerous photographs followed this section—most of which had absolutely NOTHING to do with quilts. For example, a picture of shells with an embroidered towel. That’s great—but this is a book about quilting, not embroidery. Another photograph included the following statement: “Shells find a home in an old muffin tin.” What? Of course, there was a picture included—of shells in an old muffin tin—but what does that have to do with quilting? Another photograph then showed an old hutch packed with old quilts. Great! But unfortunately, every quilter knows that you’re not supposed to fold quilts but rather roll them to avoid crease marks. I think that the worst image was the one that showed an old hutch filled with glass. The caption read, “Milk glass displayed in an open corner of the dining room.” Truly, the authors did not have to include any of that. But they persisted and continued to provide irrelevant, useless pictures and information on and on and on until, finally, we came to the quilts.

I’ve been quilting for a long time and I freely admit that I’m no “show quilter.” But I was disappointed overall with what I found in this section. If the truth be told, you can find better looking quilts on Pinterest. There just wasn’t any “Wow!” factor in this book. Instead, it reminded me of the magazines that you can find in supermarkets where you get to see kitchens and bathrooms all prettied up. The quilts were overall pretty plain and for most of them, the selected fabric wasn’t attractive in my opinion. The Kindle version of this book is selling for $19.99. But in my opinion, it would probably sell better if it was under a dollar.

Kindle version of this book is useless

Some of the patterns in this book use appliqué. However, there is no way to print the appliqué templates from a Kindle app. There is also no way to know what size they’re supposed to be once you do print them because measurements are not provided. The instructions indicate that they need to be 200%, but there is no way to tell the original printed size. There is no gauge comparison provided either.

Definitely a book for inspiration. The title clearly outlines what it contains. There are sewing projects such as a crib skirt; craft projects such as a fish skeleton sculpture formed with driftwood and beads; and several quilt patterns. The projects include instructions. The quilt instructions have clear diagrams for the construction steps, but I suspect a novice will be lost. The quilts aren't complex, they just assume that the reader will be able to fill in the blanks --something an experienced quilter will manage, however, a beginner may need additional clarification.

It's a pretty book that places each finished project in a stylishly-decorated room. Several of these photos are accompanied by photos of nearby rooms with an explanation of how color, accessories, or other details create the beach/cottage style. These insights may be helpful in creating unique tablescapes, wall hangings, cross stitch patterns, etc. Personally, I simply enjoyed looking at the lovely pictures.

Several pages have beach-related photos--the ocean, a sunset, etc. with color swatches drawn from that scene--offering the reader a palette for selecting fabric or paint or beads, etc. to create a project that evokes similar responses. The author's color choices create harmonious art works that seem effortless. I've taken and taught quilting and art classes and I know that selecting fabrics is intimidating and daunting. These quilts make me want to at least try to create something as harmonious.

I am considering adding this book to my quilting library.
