This is the bittersweet story of a young New England woman in the mid-19th century who is hemmed in by the social conventions and attitudes of the day. Lanice Bardeen travels to Boston from Amherst to stay with relatives. While she appears to be a "genteel lady, " she becomes passionately involved in a hopeless love affair, and is no longer a sheltered Victorian girl.

Oh lanice! That ending was so tacked on and made no sense for this charming character. I was tense throughout hoping she wouldn’t go off with jones, but ripley! He was so good til the end… It was a good read for sure. Well written engaging and put me there. Reminded me of Jane Austen. Recommend.
