Unloved in love is a a fantastic read. The narrative simply flows and the book can be read in no time because of the easy of reading. I love how the characters have some peculiar behaviors that are both irritating and endearing. Mrs. sen particularly stands out as the as the mother with a PhD in nagging.
The first person narrative allows one to deep-dive into the minds of every character. The same scenario from two peoples perspective is a great way to cover a range of emotions and ideas.
I enjoyed reading the novel and would love to read more title by the author!

When you turn a certain age, some behaviors are oft frowned upon. One of them is being in the state of love, or feeling attracted to another human. I attended Ritu's #BookLaunch, a fabulous event, and got to meet the gracious lady. After returning I settled with her book, curled up, ready to go on a trip. I had not expected Kiara to stay with me. She came to office with me, watching me type, laughing at me. I just could not shake her off. Kiara Sen and her passionate obsession with Kyle filled my hours and mental space. At one point, I felt so angry at Kiara that I wanted to shake her and tell her to open her eyes. Then my angst shifted to Karan. Tears are foreign to me, but I sometimes allow a heavy heart and a few meaningful sighs. I rooted for Karan, knowing that Kiara would fit perfectly in his world. Romance books tend to be mushy and immature. But, Ritu has handled the nuances so well, it makes you pine for more. I am eagerly waiting for her next book. :)

A few hours spent with the protagonists gave that much needed impetus to pick up a physical book and read again. Thanks so much Ritu for writing this book!

Do pick up a bottle of Corona before curling up with the book. Enjoy!

Unloved in Love by Rituparna Gosh is a delightful book.
It tells the tale of a romance that begins at college and the several twists and turns it takes before the two people deeply in love find each other.
The book is truly unputdownable due to the gripping narration. One’s heart races at the several twists and turns, wishing well for the protagonists that one has grown to identify with.
What I also liked about the book is the first person narrative. Each chapter carries the story forward through the eyes of one of the narrators. What this does is that instead of the omniscient view or the one sided view of each character- we get to see how the world views the character and how the characters perceive themselves.
Thus while the characters highlight their own insecurities in their internal monologue you get to view their strengths in their description from others.
This technique has made the characters so real and so relatable.
It’s a thoroughly entertaining book and I look forward to more such from this gifted story teller!

Week 32 Book 41
Unloved in love by Rituparna Ghosh
Rating 3/5

UIL is a love story about 3 imperfect people in love. Kiara is the black sheep of the family, someone who always does what's unexpected. Kyle is a boy desperately trying to win his father's approval, and balancing what he wants from life. Karan is a sought after boy, but a total enigma. The three of them go through a series of dramatic ups and downs over a period of years.

Decently written book, good for a break between heavy books.

A contemporary tale of real people . Love stories are normally portrayed as fantasies that end in a 'happily ever after'. This story talks about different kinds of love and you feel each kind as you travel through the lives of Kiara, Karan and Kyle. These 3 characters pulled me into their world and I was hooked from the word go!
All in all, a wonderful read and please do not mistake this to be a candy floss love story. It's about the loves and lives that each one of us has led at some point in time, that makes it completely relatable !

Where do I begin with this one?

The fact that I bought it on impulse after hearing the author speak? Or the fact that last night I couldn’t put it down to the extent that I went for 38% to 100% in one night.

Unloved in Love: The Story of Imperfect People appeals because of the central three characters. Kiara is a brilliant yet adorably awkward budding entrepreneur. Kyle is hunk from London, but what lies beneath he surface is a difficult relationship with his father and a yearning for acceptance, which is a huge source of conflict. The last character, Karan, oh I’m a HUGE fan of his! He is a little rough around the edges, and emotional in so many ways, but ultimately has a big heart and a lot of love to give.

For me, the three of them were like companions for the past days when I was reading the book. I thought about them, laughed with them, got angry with them, and went through all the emotions that one might normally, with real people.

Ultimately the story is also about the comfort we have with ourselves, and understanding our own feelings. Each of these characters is often blinded by their own imperfections and must navigate these to move forward.

It is also a story about love and fairytales, and in this sense is a modern fairytale - more realistic and pragmatic than the garden variety Cinderella or Snow White we may have grown up with.

As a woman who grew up with these, it is easy to relate to wanting a fairytale ending and all the implications and vulnerability that come along with that. But my favourite part about the story is it shows heartbreak as a two-sided, complicated thing that involves the fault and agency of both sides rather than one being a helpless victim.

Although I might not have picked this up, had I not heard the author speak about it and read from it, I am glad I did! I had just finished reading a rather heavy novel, and Unloved in Love gave me the perfect light read in between, so I can go back and try something new.

Highly recommend this one folks!

To tell you the truth, when I first came across the book, I found the title a bit odd. “What do you mean by Unloved in love?” I mused to myself. However, once I started reading, I couldn’t stop myself from turning the pages and finished the book even before I realised! Written from the perspective of the three protagonists, Kiara, Karan and Kyle, you become privy to all their thoughts and emotions as the events unfold. For the same incident, you get to know intimately what each protagonist was thinking, you feel more involved with the characters as compared to a linear narrative. You are aware of each side of the story. The book has wry humour, the heartbreak feels as if your heart is breaking, the romance makes you sigh. This book is messy with emotions as I chuckled, laughed and cried in this book. Even though some might say, the end is predictable, it is not without its twists and turns, keeping you hooked.
Only when I finished the book, I realised why the tittle was Unloved In Love. The book makes you believe in perfect endings. It makes you realise the fact that nothing comes easy, the path of love is strewn with ego, insecurities, self-doubt and heartbreak.

I totally love love.......
I mean I love romance. I can watch most Yash Chopra movies many times over, and love even cheesy, mushy, over the top hindi fillums .
Romance , as a genre for reading, however is more difficult to find and enjoy than movies; and it had been a while since I had found the right one!
Still, as I wrote earlier, the pandemic had me craving stories that would make me believe in love.
Well Unloved in love (Readomania) did just that!!
I had recently connected with the author and was struck by the twinkle in her eyes which would become brighter whenever she spoke about her book!
So I reached out for this book, and was not disappointed!!
This is the story of Rituparna Ghosh Kini’s main character Kiara. The settings and situations are all very relatable and I found myself rooting for Kiara as she works through her feelings for Kyle and Karan.
From college days to becoming established professionals , the protagonists grow and so does your attachment to them.
Love can only be found once they find themselves, and the author takes you through this delightful journey in a unique way.
All of them must face the vagaries of life that adulthood brings, and make peace with their demons too. They understand that life isn’t perfect and that making mistakes is integral to evolving. As you follow them on this path, you will find yourself realizing that there is a bit of Karan, Kiara and Kyle in all of us.
I finished the book at a record speed because I needed to know that Kiara would be okay; that’s how involved the author had me in it! Not just Kiara’s , everyone’s characters come together beautifully in the book; and it leaves you feeling warm and happy… content that Kiara was finally loved and in love!!

I liked the way the book traveled around relationships and their complexity, how it focused on the characters and their inability to realize what they really want. The importance of the tiniest of decisions comes to light in this fun-packed light read. Focused on the newly adulting emotions, the read shows how love is accompanied by a variety of factors and how it's far from ideal. The Corona beer was a nice touch! So were the cat and the guitar. I especially liked how realistic the author made it all out to be...that we just fall unknowingly in love and recover from all that blitz much later. A thoroughly enjoyable rollercoaster ride.

I am more of a non-fictional reader and still found myself engrossed & hooked into the novel over the sunny weekend. Simple and easy to read book that took me back to my school and college days. The characters in the book were quite relatable and reflect the varied perspectives a person can have to the same situation. Well done Ritu!!

Contemporary romantic story about millennials portraying that life is not a fairy tale but a constant struggle to achieve your dreams and dream partner. The author has beautifully etched each character and made them real by narrating story in first person.Gripping and engaging.

This is a fantastic read. Once the characters got introduced in the initial chapters, the book became unputdownable. It is actually a thriller. I do not read fiction generally but read it as a friend strongly recommended. And now I am waiting for the next one from the author.

Reading this book was akin to watching a Bollywood blockbuster. I finished the book in a jiffy. Yes, I was eager to finish the book and know the ending. Though the end was quite predictable, I was eagerly reading to know how the story pans out. Well-crafted characters, lucid style of writing, first person narrations from the point of view of the characters -- everything made the book an enjoyable read.

[2:09 AM, 7/23/2020] Lakshya: “Why is life so hard?
That’s an out-of-syllabus question.” – Rituparna Ghosh, Unloved in Love, @iamreadomania
Loving is hard. Kiara, Kyle, and Karan learned this the hard way.
Kiara, a girl overshadowed by her siblings and hungry for her mother’s approval is hell-bent on creating history by opening her own venture. Kyle, an exchange student from London has come to India to feel free from life decided for him by his father. Karan, a troubled guy whose past has left a deep impact on him leaving him not believing in relationships anymore. But love plays its cards and their lives change forever.
Unlike other love stories, this one wasn’t a fairy tale. It portrayed real emotions and incidents which many of us can relate to. The feeling of love and the mistakes we make in love are very nicely explained by the author.
The author has done justice to her characters and they play their part well. I could feel Sonali’s friendship, Baba’s love, Karan’s friendship, Meera’s understanding, Kyle’s dilemma and most importantly Kiara’s will to prove herself. The book not only taught me a lesson on love but also on friendship, family, and passion for one’s work.
The language used is easy and the story feels like that of our own or a person very close to us which makes it truly unputdownable. Every chapter is written so nicely as a narration from either of three main characters which enhances the beauty of the story as a whole.
All in all, the book is a great pleasure time reading with a few important lessons to impart.
RATINGS:
Story: 4/5
Characters: 5/5
Cover: Just so beautiful. 5/5

What makes this story – Unloved in Love – different from any other similar romantic saga, when the title itself is an oxymoron. What does author Rituparna Ghosh say that distinguishes this book from others? Maybe, it is in the way she says it. Ms. Ghosh reveals a wry sense of humour from page one, when she introduces the way her heroine, Kiara, was born to parents who were taken aback when she arrived. From that point on, Kiara continues to be self-deprecating, “cruising rock bottom in expectations” till she shocks everyone by doing well as a career woman.
Three main voices tell the tale, followed by a fourth voice at the end. The three voices belong to Kiara Sen, Kyle Wolf (an interesting German background there) and Karan Shergill, three attractive young people, as they take the action ahead in a series of see-sawing events that keep the reader wondering what the outcome will be.
Kiara sees herself in a mirror that is diametrically opposite to how others view her, maybe due to a childhood that has been eclipsed by supposedly more attractive and intelligent siblings, and a mother who minces no words. So, when two men, who are also best friends, vie for her affections, she turns into a nervous wreck, torn between a pair of grey-blue eyes on the one hand, and gorgeous brown eyes on the other. That one has Greek God looks, and the other has two scars on an unconventional face, does not help in the least.
Both Kyle and Karan have their own share of angst, fuelled while they were growing up… issues of abandonment, trust, authoritarianism, emotional turmoil, and career and relationship woes. While one needs Kiara to make him feel braver and basks in her “witty, insightful, doe-eyed adulation”, the other drowns in her expressive eyes, and declares his feelings openly to the reader, but never to Kiara. “She encouraged you to completely surrender to her, to let go and totally and utterly belong.”
Kiara grows as a person, and as an entrepreneur, through all her tribulations. She is only human as she lets go of opportunities for the sake of love, but she hangs in there, standing on her own feet till she finally emerges triumphant.
By the end of the book, the reader wants her to take a particular path. The man who loves her waxes eloquent. “I was again reminded of a warm afternoon by the beach, sea gulls cawing and gentle waves dancing around my ankles.” A man who can say something that romantic is worth having!
However, just when the reader is waiting for that perfect ending, Ms. Ghosh whisks it out of the way. This is a book about imperfect people, after all, which does not take away from the fact that it is a delightful story worth reading!

I picked up this book over the weekend. I enjoyed Kiara Sen’s journey from being a gauche, naïve girl who fell flat on her bottom and was struck dumb in the presence of attractive men in the first chapter to a poised woman who knows her own mind towards the end. I admired how the author showed us every step of that journey, and how she went from putty in the hands of pretty much everyone in her life to a beautifully moulded (though scarred), firm individual by the end.
I was rooting for Kiara throughout and felt every barb her mom threw at her, the thousand little cuts every one inflicted on her without knowing. I felt those. I had to quell the urge to kick both Kyle and Karan in the teeth at different times, and was glad that Kiara learnt not to bend and buckle at the whims of this thoroughly unreasonable pair of friends between whom she was pulled and pushed for much of the book.
A different kind of romance, I enjoyed it very much!

I have two words for this book and they are 'extremely relatable'. So many times while reading the book, I felt i could identify with some of the traits, circumstances of the characters. I'm usually a very slow reader, but I had to force myself to stay away and get my regular tasks done, that's how gripping this is. I'm glad I picked it up! A worthy read.

I picked this book with great apprehension, because this isn't my genre. But, the honesty & passion in the story delivery got me hooked. A story of "not so" perfect people in love by the author is extremely relatable because that's what we all are - Imperfect.

This is a story that straddles the sweet and the complex in equal measure. It certainly invites you to smile in these dreary times and reminisce about the golden days. This book is about imperfect people with complicated relationships. It had me invested in the characters that the authour has lovingly created. I rooted for all of them to find happy endings . The book has twists that made me catch my breath even as I related to Kiara’s internal monologue.
The story has left me wanting to read more from the authors pen. Congratulations and best always.

Rituparna Ghosh’s ‘Unloved in Love’ portrays the true elements of human emotions and the raptures of feeling euphoric and yet being engulfed by the strong sense of rejection simultaneously.
A story that lets you experience the layers of emotions where you laugh with the characters, love with them, cry with them, feel enraged along with them, and all the while the plethora of sentiments keep tugging at your heart!
The engrossing story of relatable characters lets you glimpse through a set of optimistic possibilities, and leaves you longing for more!
A must-read not only to discover the emotion of love one anticipates from a soulmate, but also to determine how to evolve through the aspects of love in various other dealings like friendship, family, parents, profession, and most importantly loving and accepting oneself.

The story of imperfect people, how true! Nobody’s perfect but there are very few books which address this. This book is a romantic fiction, nonetheless it will appeal to people reading other genres too, here’s why!
Kiara, Kyle and Karan are on a journey of self-discovery, and life during and after college - During the course of this effort, they realise many things about themselves and each other which lead to plot points and twists you would not normally expect in a romance.
Fantastic delivery of thought and emotion this book is a display of regular people, indeed! Rituparna's debut in novel-writing has come up with something new and inherently natural in all of us.Go, pick it up !
