This book is almost child-like to a fault.

The story starts off with Jessie Mae being very much with her "outrageous" friend Charlie. She can't believe that he can do so many things, like walking on stilts. After Charlie gets Jessie Mae a very special magic kit, Jessie Mae completely changes. She is no longer wishing she could be like her friend Charlie, she is her own magical being.

I think this book is an amazing description of character development.
