This Expo book brings together leading academic and policymaker experts to reflect on the significant challenges faced by lagging regions in participating in the European Union’s Research and Innovation Strategies for Smart Specialisation (RIS3) programme. In doing so, the book offers a set of new policy recommendations on the design and implementation of appropriate Smart Specialisation Strategies (S3) in lagging regions, which may enable them to benefit from the opportunities of digitalisation and Industry 4.0 (I4.0).
I read this book as a part of my thesis. So, it is a bit awkward to review it on here where I mainly associate with my reading for pleasure activity. The book comes with seven chapters, each chapter is concise and easy to follow. The authors provide sufficient empirical cases to discuss along with the policy recommendations to tackle with regional differentiation in peripheral areas. To enjoy the most of the book, I think a small background on smart specialisation is required. I want to give 4.5 out of 5. (-0.5 was taken from the lack of rich theoretical discussion, on the other hand it is also a plus)
