About the author

Struan Simpson was educated at Kingston Grammar School and has a background in public health. He advises on the international regulation of safety and the environment and has wider interests in Third World development and the opportunities for disabled people in recreation and employment. In the 1960s and 1970s Struan spent several years in West Africa organizing family planning programmes for The Ford Foundation and was awarded a Fellowship to the University of California at Berkeley in recognition of his work on infant feeding in Nigeria. Until recently, when he began to take a close interest in ecology, Struan worked as an independent consultant to the offshore oil industry, contributing to the development of an international basis for comparing accident data and representing the industry at the International Maritime Organization.
He has worked on projects for the Nature Conservancy Council and the Sports Council as well as producing a guide to UK nature reserves for the Country Landowners Association and RADAR.
He lives with his wife Jean and two children in Westminster.
