Iowa Agriculture: A History of Farming, Family and Food

Rate this book
The Tall Corn State's agricultural history influences countless aspects of modern life. To truly understand Iowa, you have to understand the culture of agriculture--the stories of the people of the land. In many ways, these are untold stories, especially as more generations of families are further removed from living or working on Iowa farms. Visitors from around the globe travel to Iowa annually for major events like the Farm Progress Show, the World Pork Expo and the World Food Prize. Agriculture has shaped Iowa's landscape from the location of towns and the evolution of the world-famous Iowa State Fair to Iowa's beloved culinary traditions like breaded pork tenderloins, sweet corn and more. Join fifth-generation Iowa farmer Darcy Dougherty Maulsby as she details the fascinating history of agriculture in Iowa.

Maybe it was the title, but I wasn't drawn to this book as I have been to Darcy's other books. But this one too is filled with compelling stories! Beginning with Iowa's soils and Native American farming, there are stories about how the state was surveyed, the roll of farmers in the Underground Railroad, drainage tiles, immigration, Rural Free Delivery, country schools and churches, the Orphan Trains, farm foreclosures, even a farmer who came face-to-face with outlaws Bonnie and Clyde.

There's the birth of 4-H, George Washington Carver's years in Iowa, Henry A. Wallace, Norman Borlaug, even favorite ag cartoonist Rick Friday! Iowa's own Corn Palaces, the weather, the 1948 National Plowing Match at Dexter, Iowa, drawing a crowd of 100,000 to see and hear President Harry Truman.

Living History Farms and the Machine Shed Restaurant, even a few recipes. Seed Savers Exchange, the Iowa Food & Family Project, Century and Heritage Farms, even a small section about Iowa Barn Quilts.

It's a fascinating book by Iowa's Storyteller who is also a fifth-generation Iowa farmer.

An excellent history and overall of Iowa agriculture. Highly recommended. The stories are short and easily read. Ms. Maulsby did a great job researching centuries of Iowa history.
