I enjoyed this one. I’ve read a couple of Louise Fuller’s books and like her writing style. The heroine tries hard to stand up for herself but in the first part of the book, the hero is really horrid to her. Both have conflicting memories of the night they met 2 years earlier and it’s only when they sort out what really transpired that night that they start to relax and let their feelings develop. It has a lovely epilogue.

MAJOR Plot spoilers ahead. Read at your own risk.

This one was between a four stars and a four and half stars for me. I keep wavering on what I want to give it because there were things that I really, really liked and into especially in the beginning, but then again there were some things that I just didn’t care for that made me waver to the four stars scale. So, I decided just to give it a range of star rating instead of committing to one rating over the other.

This one started off pretty intense. It had a really intense setup between Bass and Mimi due to circumstances surrounding her family as well as an incident that happened between the two of them two years previous. That caused a lot friction and tension between Bass and Mimi that made them have this really antagonistic relationship when they were reunited. There were a lot of hurt feelings and misunderstandings between them that just made them really go at it. They had such intense feelings for one another, and the way they got them out was by going at each other in take no prisoner kind of thing. It was a lot of head butting going on.

As fun to see those intense back and forth moments between them, it did drag a bit because they were having the same argument over and over again where he didn’t trust her while she was hurt over his rejection after he left her naked in his bedroom and never came back. She thought that they were going to make love and wanted to because she had been in love with him for years since he was her best friend’s brother, but he never showed back up due to him finding about embezzlement from her family member’s causing him not trust her and thinking that she was playing him. It was a complicated situation for sure with lots of hurt feelings and misunderstandings like I said, but this went on for so long in the story that it got to be a little much. I just wanted them to sit down and have a conversation with one another and hash it out, having everything out in the open with the misunderstandings corrected between them. They did have that moment, but it took like over half the book to get there. It was just a lot of repeating of things like what happened in the past and feelings and yada yada. That could have been speed up a little bit more.

Once they got past those misunderstandings, then they started to see each other in another light and started focusing on other emotions they had towards each other not centered around anger. She had feelings for him for years while he was very drawn to her the night of the incident and was very ready to make love to her. So once that anger disappeared then all the those feelings came back but tenfold and much more intense. The pull was very much still there, and they decided to embrace it.

This might not have been the case, but this was the first time I had ever noticed in a Presents where the issue of consent was more explicit mentioned in the story. Not to say other Presents don’t have consent in them because they do, but it not stated in black and white like it was in this one with the word consent actually being used. It wasn’t verbal though it was in Mimi’s head during the love scene while Bass kept asking her if this was okay or that was okay, etc. and her head she said herself that “Oh, he keeps asking me these questions because he wants my consent of everything that he was doing.” I just thought that was really interesting and brilliantly handled I thought. I was glad that, not only was it in here, but she was acknowledging what he was doing in her own head. I really appreciated that.

The love scenes between the two were pretty hot and spicy, which a lot of that was due to the fact that they had all this build up of sexual tension between them that never went away but was covered by anger from the incident of that night. When it finally came to getting what they both wanted and needed from each other, it was just satisfying and pleasurable for both as they came together. They honored their connection with one another that was beyond the physical. There was intimacy between the two of them especially in the afterglow scene that really appreciated. That was were the tenderness between them really shined and made what they had feel very special between them. It was nice to see those interactions together during those intimate, spicy moments.

Something else I really appreciated that came after their love scenes was that they had a little romantic date night in a hot air balloon. It was just really special. It felt right. It gave them a date night that continued to strength their bond and connection to one another on every level aside from the bedroom. They had some cute little affection moments, which I loved. It was just a sweet moment that I was glad they got to experience together.

Though they did have these special, intimate moments together, I did feel like something was missing in their romance. I can’t put finger on what it was, but just something didn’t feel quite complete. Maybe it was the pacing because once they did get everything out in the open, then things happened pretty quickly between them so there wasn’t a little build up before they consummated their relationship. Maybe it was the fact that even though they did have conversations with one another, I felt that they were missing an important one. I don’t know it was something, but I can’t tell you what. There was a missing piece somewhere.

Overall I did enjoy this story despite the fact I don’t know what exact rating that I want to give it. It was still good. I loved that this was a best friend’s brother story, which I wasn’t expecting from the back cover so that was a really nice surprise for me. Since it was best friend’s brother just setup so many complicated feelings already as well as intense ones like the fact that Mimi had been in love with him for years because she had known him for a long time so I enjoyed that. I enjoyed the intensity of the story from the very beginning that drew me right in. It wasn’t because of her being in love with him that made it intense, it was that night they almost spent together, which just added a whole another level to their complicated feelings. There were lots of misunderstandings and hurt feelings, causing them to have these really intense encounters with lot of friction between them. There was a lot of head butting acting as they were fighting each other passionately of why they couldn’t stand the other. It was insane how much friction was between the two of them, but I loved it. I will say it went on a little long, and I wish they had that honest conversation sooner so it didn’t take that long for them to get their act together. The love scenes were great and was as intense as their anger was for each other, but tit was more than that. It was about feelings, connection, and intimacy that I really enjoyed. There was something missing for me in their romance that I can’t put my finger out, but I felt like there was another puzzle piece somewhere in the story that didn’t get put into the story to complete it. But it was still a solid read that I really enjoyed.

Mimi Miller has loved Basa Caine most of her life. He is the brother of her best and only friend. Only because a scandal caused by her stepfather and uncle destroyed her both with friends and business. They actually fell into bed together at Alicia's birthday and she wants to tell him she never slept with anyone, but doesn't happen as planned and when he goes for champagne and doesn't return she runs away. She didn't realize that wasn't because he didn't want her but because of the scandal. When asked to film her best friend Alicia's wedding she must confront Basa again. He is cold and unyielding and when he whisks her away to his island so he can tell her how angry he is with her all truth comes out. Tangled web, yes , not knowing all the truth again yes, so they are able to confront the past and what happens is for the reader to see. Loved the story Basa was tough and hard as nails but has a soft core and Ms. Fuller gives an
amazing HEA.
