Every mermaid and merman has a chance of becoming temporarily human, before ultimately choosing between the deep waters and the land up above. Narya, a young mermaid, surfaces in hopes of finding out where she truly belongs. On her first night as a human, she accidentally stumbles across Nick and Louise, two marine biology students in the Bahamas. Mistaking them for her support group that consisted of past merpeople who chose to remain human, she manages to keep her identity secret after discovering her error in time.Nick, who has an immeasurable passion for all things underwater, shies away from the ocean ever since a tragic incident a few years ago. When Narya appears, a deep sense of nostalgia and inexplicable familiarity gnaws away at him, rendering him a helpless prey to her charms. As unconventional friendships begin to flourish, a spark of romance between Narya and Nick also puts the mermaid in a dilemma. She is treading dangerously close to the edge of the water as she accompanies her new friends on sea expeditions and raising suspicions amidst marine experts in the area. Is she willing to risk everything she held dear underwater for a human? Is love enough for a mermaid to survive on dry land?
L.L. Kombe manages her life between Canada and Tanzania. When not out exploring the breathtaking Serengeti plains, she reads, writes, and travels with her husband and daughter whenever possible. This is her first novel.
I really enjoyed this book! It's lighthearted but explores deeper meanings about dealing with loss, love, ambitions, and unexpected friendships. It's not overly predictable like some novels and I really liked the fantasy world that Kombe has created in Take me to the Deepest Blue; it's unique and not just identical to every other mermaid book out there. I even learned a lot about marine biology in the process, you can tell there was effort put in to ensure the science is detailed and authentic, which is a nice touch. Overall it was a heartwarming and fast read.
Think The Little Mermaid, with all the clumsiness and hilarious awkward moments... but this character can telepathically communicate with sharks. A light but fantastic read with lots of unforgettable turning points and lessons on loss and love. The protagonist’s adventure as a human is comedy perfectly mixed with drama, and will keep you fantasizing on the mythical world of mermaids. Kombe was meant to write young adult fiction.
Take Me To The Deepest Blue was such a delight to read - it had been a while since I picked up a fantasy novel and I finished this in one sitting. An easy read with a captivating storyline reminiscent of The Little Mermaid, but with its own fun twists (two words - shark telepathy!!). There was a satisfying amount of detail that went into describing the mermaids and their world and I thoroughly enjoyed being able to visualize the characters and places through Kombe's descriptive writing. Narya and Nick are charming as main characters, and their character chemistry and blossoming romance left me wanting more at the end of the book - a sequel, perhaps?! All in all a wonderful, whimsical story to get lost in if you enjoy fantasy and magical realism.
Wow. What a fantastic book. I was intrigued from the beginning, since the book includes mermaids, which I have not read about before. I didn’t know what was going to happen or where the story would go, but as I continued to read, I was more and more intrigued, really curious about the ending. There is a lot packed into 260 pages. Mermaids, difficult life decisions, love, friendship, secrecy, and survival. I am impressed by the way this book is written! I love L. L. Kombe’s writing style! Can’t wait to read another. I highly recommend this book.
all of my grownup little mermaid dreams come true. 🧜♀️ i was gifted this one by the author and @booksandwhiskey_. i’m glad i was sent it because it’s not one i would usually pick up, but i really enjoyed it. it’s a story of loss, putting yourself back together, and believing in something that you’re not sure even exists. i read this one in less than a day. it was entertaining and well written!
I really enjoyed this book! It was an easy read and I couldn’t put it down. Character personalities were very relatable, and come on, who doesn’t like a story about mermaids?!
I really wish I could have rated this book higher but I’ll explain why later on. I really enjoyed reading this. It was definitely a page turner and an easy, light, beach read. The story is like a modern day The Little Mermaid and includes lots of clumsy and awkward moments that put a smile on my face and even made me have a little giggle. Narya the mermaid has her chance at being a human. She is washed up on the shore by Nick who is a marine biologist. The characters are written well and the chemistry between Narya and Nick was delightful. The ending left me wanting more. Perhaps a sequel could be in the works? My main issue was there were quite a few grammatical errors throughout the book which was off putting. If it wasn’t for these I would have rated it higher than 4/5. Overall, an enjoyable young adult story.
💫 Book Review 💫 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐌𝐞 𝐓𝐨 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐁𝐥𝐮𝐞 by 𝘓𝘓 𝘒𝘰𝘮𝘣𝘦 Bizarre, enrapturing and mystical are how I would describe this second novel by the author. It’s based on the Disney classic The Little Mermaid and could definitely be classed as a young reader/youth novel 🧜♀️ As I began the book, I literally couldn’t stop comparing Ariel’s amazement of her human legs to that of Narya’s (the mermaid in the novel). The clumsiness & the wonder at a world that was living side-by-side with the mystical world of mermaid. 𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭 the plot differs as we learn that each merman gets a chance to experience the human world 7-9x before they have to decide whether they stay on land or head deep back into the sea. Narya exits the water for her first time and stumbles upon two people who aren’t the ‘transitioned humans’ that are supposed to be meeting her to help guide her first experience. Rather it’s two young marine biologists: Nick & Louise who can’t know of the truth of Narya’s true form. Cute story that I can pass along to my nieces 💙🤍 especially the older ones who loved the Little Mermaid. #
The book is a page turner, a descriptive colorful story of a mermaid experiencing life on land. It is a light read but with depth of emotions and meaning that the author takes the readers through. When I reflect back on the story, book explores meaning of grief, family bond, friendship, and most of all the meaning of forgiveness of oneself.
