Trained as a theologian. David thinks about God… all the time. Whether as a father or grandfather, college instructor or Sunday School teacher, poet or writer, he seeks to imagine God in ways that are helpful and hopeful. In this book he brings insights from seminary and graduate school into a story that is deceptively simple and simply profound.
As the second person to ever review this, I will say Weiss wrote a beautiful book. This is a massive and long story but shows a life and a time period I had not learned much about. It was a joy to dive into the world of 17th century England and the mind of one of its greatest architects.
I came for the architecture and stayed for the fascinating stories of English politics, religion and art. In a narrative book provides a stunning amount of history while also having characters that shine. Wrens friendships with Daniel, children, and other peer make this story personal and emotional.
I read this book on a whim, because the inside cover has St. Paul's Cathedral, and really was impressed by the lengths that Wren went through to have the church built. Weiss does a great job of combining history with a narrative fiction. For anyone making a trip to London this tome should be on their list of reading material in preparation for the trip.
