Stronger and Bolder: The Story of Richmond's 2019 Premiership

Rate this book
Following on from the best-selling Yellow & Black: A season with Richmond, Konrad Marshall’s acclaimed account of Richmond’s 2017 Premiership, comes Stronger and Bolder: The Story of Richmond's 2019 Premiership. It tells the intimate story of the Richmond Football Club through the highs and lows of its 2019 finals campaign, explaining how the club recovered from its disappointment of 2018. With unprecedented access to club officials, players and coaches, author Konrad Marshall takes the reader inside the rooms at the key moments of the campaign, chronicling the Tigers’ journey to AFL football’s Holy Grail.

This is not just a book of wins and losses, it’s the story of a professional football club and how it operates at every level: from the fitness staff, to the coaching panel, the players, and the Board. The Richmond Football Club has continued to change enormously following the 2017 triumph, its first Premiership since 1980, and Marshall explains in detail the enormous amount of work and thought that has gone into every decision made—on and off the field.

Stronger and Bolder: The Story of Richmond's 2019 Premiership is full of unparalleled access to all the key moments, including frank and occasionally emotional interviews with key figures. Yellow & Black: A Season with Richmond was a compulsory read for all football fans, and critically acclaimed. Stronger and Bolder picks up where it left off.

“Stronger and Bolder: The Story of Richmond’s 2019 Premiership” (S&B) by Konrad Marshall is an excellent follow up to “Yellow And Black: A Season With Richmond”. S&B.

Starting 12 months early with the Richmond Tigers devastating loss to arch rival Collingwood in the 2018 preliminary final S&B tells the story of how the culture of the club got the players through not just that disappointment but helped them push past the adversities of major injuries to key players during the 2019 season. With a focus on the finals series Marshall provides the behind the scenes narrative with incredible insights into pre match messages from the coach, and interviews with players telling their amazing back stories.

Now I will admit to being a little biased with this book as I am a very big Tigers supporter. Any Richmond supporter would be missing something truly special if this book isn’t on their shelves at home. That said the insights into the mindset and culture of a winning football club is something that any football supporter would enjoy.

Easy to read and packed full of emotion S&B is not only a great Richmond Football Club story but also a great football story in general and gets five out of five stars.

Moderately interesting take on how a well-oiled professional sports club is run when at the top of its game.

More interesting would be to see the inside workings of a sports club as they transform themselves from failures to champions; or vice-versa.

Stronger and Bolder is really Humble and Hungry.
Obviously a satisfying read for any Richmond tragic. But the chapter about Marlion Pickett was beautifully written and brought me to tears.

Might be a little bit biased because I was there grand final day. Loved the chapter about Pickett.
