Banaras the earlier Kashi is the holy place of temples. It is not not only a sacred place for the people of the Hindu faith but also attracts tourists from all over the world. Set in the backdrop of this holy place is a story that gives the reader a glimpse of the city .

What I like?
The book is well researched.
The detailed description of the city is very informative.
The pictures used gives a visual imagery of the story.

What I didn't like?
The book needs to go for another round of editing.

My Verdict
Good Narration, lucid language, justified characterization, intriguing title and an attractive cover with a gripping plot makes this book a nice one time read

Even though the book isn’t of the horror genre there was something really scary about the entire book. I have to say that it is very brave of the author to explore the part of the society that consists of babas, priests and aghoris. Nobody has even done it, it is unusual, scary, unexplored and that is what makes it even more intriguing. The author’s writing style is really good. I was engrossed in the book through out, I love me a good nail biting story. The author has painted a very pretty picture of Banaras, and the actual pictures are an added bonus to the entire story. The way the author writes about Banaras really has me planning my next trip. The book does need thorough editing, the not-so-great editing was a buzzkill to say the least. The characters were really interesting as well but it felt like something was missing, I can’t quite keep my finger on it. I recommend this book none the less.

Unholy Tales from Banaras is a short tale by Anuj Tikku.
The story starts with the death of a poojary in the temple. Evil starts to take place in the city of Kaashi and balance has to be restored back by the Two Sadhus.
The death of the Poojary is actually a murder by his own wife so as to take away all the gold Poojary had stolen in the name of donations for the temple.
Being in affair with the doctor, the whole murder was proven as seizure.
The sadhus being aware of the same, brought destruction of the evil by killing the wife of the poojary and in the end being killed by Karma.
My View:
1) This book could have been much more better. The end could have had a bit of twist and turns but it ended poorly.
2) There were alot of mistakes in the sentences even though the language was good.
Recommended to people who would want to go for a light reading.

Banaras, also widely known as Kashi is one of the most holiest places for Hindus and a tourist attraction for people from different corners of the world. Set in this holy city the author brings to us a murder mystery!
A Pandit is killed in a temple, this mystery death is soon followed by his wife's death. The author has described the city in great detail. The hunt for the murderer also gives a vivid picture of this holy city which is home to many priests, sages and spiritual people.
The story is good but narrations could have been better. The cover is absolutely gorgeous and title is apt, the book also contains some pictures of Banaras which is great!
Though the plot and characters are good the book gets boring as the writing style isn't very gripping and there are too many grammatical mistakes.
It would have been more fun to read if it was edited well!

“Unholy tales from Banaras” is about holy city of Kashi. Anuj Tikku gave a lot of details about the holy city of Varanasi. This is the city of lord Shiva. Hindus come here for cremation as it is believed that we get moksha if cremated here.

A pujari is killed in the temple in a mysterious way and soon thereafter his wife is also killed. There is ray ban baba who is suspected of the crime.

The book is not well written and there are countless spelling mistakes. It seems there was no proof reader and editor for the book and it is printed in a hasty manner. These put me off from reading and the book is below average.

[Detailed review is available at: https://thinkerviews.com/books/englis...]

Recently I got a chance to read "Unholy Tales From Banaras". From the title, it looked like a crime thriller but the cover page was giving a hint of it belong to the horror genre. The book, however, is a crime thriller as the author has mentioned.

Before continuing further let me disclaim that I have downloaded the book from Amazon India - when a book promotion was running (the book was available for free, then). The review is unbiased by all means, as always.

The Plot:
It was a regular morning in the holy city of Banaras. As usual, the priest of the Mahamrityunjay temple opened the doors of the abode of Lord Shiva on the regular time. He started preparing for the morning prayer (aarti) which a few regular people along with any enthusiastic visitor(s) to the city was going to attend. It was his routine. The time is not ripe yet for the Sun to show his face.

While performing his routine activities, the priest collapsed on the floor. Onlookers took notice of the same and the doctor of the area was called. The doctor has checked the priest and declared him dead due to heart-seizure.

An Aghodi named Chashma Baba was viewing the happenings a little far away from the street. He informed his confidante Pitara that it is not a death, it is a murder, and there is a foul play!

Why did Chashma Baba claim that? Why he was called Chashma Baba? Who is Pitara? Was it murder or just a regular death (without any foul play)? What will the police discover? Well, all these questions are answered in the book.

Views and Reviews:
The title of the book is quite interesting. Banaras aka Varanasi aka Kashi is the oldest known civilized city still resides in its own form. Of course, with a modern makeover. It is considered as one of the holiest cities, especially for Hindus. So, "Unholy Tales" from a "Holy" city, is a contrast combination that will definitely attract the potential reader to the book.

The book is not a horror story nor it has any explicit adulteries, some of the scenes, however, are for mature readers. Anyway, murder mysteries are for adult readers, so just make sure to keep it away from underage readers.

The characters of Chashma Baba and Pitara are the most explored ones. An Aghodi having a habit of wearing Rayban goggles and known as Chashma Baba - the thought itself is amusing. Pitara is a snake charmer who keeps with him two cobras in a small Pitara. So, the names of the prime characters are decided thoughtfully.

The story moves ahead with twists and turns. What I like the most is the climax of the book. It, rather than glorifying the wrongdoings, follow the path where "justice prevails". It is possibly the most positive aspect of the book.

Some twists are good but don't leave the impact expected from them due to poor proofreading! Yes, like the last few books of Anuj Tikku, this one also has a serious issue of having a lot of spelling, grammar, and proofreading errors. And, that prevents the book from being desirable. At places, while you were enjoying the book, you will think to put it down. That is definitely an area where the author and his team need to improve on a serious note.

The same issue is there with the bonus articles about Banaras. When you are enjoying root level real information about Banaras and various places of the city like BHU, you will be disappointed by poorly framed sentences and other mistakes. A good lot of information just becomes not so good.

The pictures of Banaras are well-edited and infused in the book. The author himself is a travel blogger and he took these pictures. They are pretty interesting. I wish the entire book was like that.

I will give it around 5.5 to 6 stars out of 10.

REVIEW

A well informed and suggestive search by the author in order to present a book on a taboo topic and writing about the spiritual capital of India, Banaras. The author has opted for such an interesting plot and the theme. This is used as a holy place as well as the sacred place of faith. The mysterious story and the twists and turns about the Baba of banaras has left my mouth open. In the book, story of sudden death is excavated and the plot is formed.

The pace of this book is firm and fine and the content is crisp. I like the narration of the book that how well it is done and the imaginative senses of the author.

It is incredibly written and the genre of horror thriller has paid justice. It has been intriguing and amazing.

Historically, Varanasi or Kashi, as many like to call it, counts amongst the oldest continuously inhabited cities of the world. But many others believe that its history is as old as time itself. Even a skeptical soul cannot resist its spiritual allure and the vibrancy of its rich culture.

I recently had the opportunity to read a book about Banaras and needless to state, both the reader and the believer in me was too excited to let it pass. Read on to know more about my thoughts on author Anuj Tikku’s latest book, Unholy Tales from Banaras.

What to expect?

Expect a short read that shares multiple tales from the land of Banaras. Expect a book that is part fiction and part travel-writing. Expect a book that paints a rather vivid picture of the city and its exuberant culture.

How good is the writing style?

The first thing that strikes the reader is the attention to detail, whether it is the description of the city itself or its many ghats. Or whether it is the description of the enigmatic Chashma Baba or the poor unassuming Shyam Pandit – the attention paid to details is commendable.

What did I like?

The first part of the book is captivating. I like the way Anuj initiates the mystery; laying the trap and luring the reader to go further. The atmosphere that he creates is intense and foreboding; hinting at the thrill that may lie ahead.

What did I not like?

Like most other books by the author, Unholy Tales from Banaras lacks editing and proof reading. The book is full of grammatical errors and that makes it very difficult for the reader to sit back and enjoy the read. Much effort is wasted on making sense of a text that comes replete with errors.

It all boils down to the entertainment quotient

When it comes to entertainment, the book sure shows a lot of promise. But unfortunately, the whole appeal and effect of the book are lost because of poor editing. It takes great patience and perseverance on part of the reader to go through the numerous grammatical and editing errors that accompany the text.

A friend of mine suggested this book and I honestly don't regret reading; in-fact, am glad that I read!
Let me begin with the title of the book - 5/5- for, it is interestingly scary and gives a promise of an entertaining read.
Speaking of the cover of the book- good choice for ages above the age of 14- 4/5 rating (since the picture depicts of drugs, it is advisable for kids to avoid)
Let me talk about the content now. The theme revolves around the death of a temple priest, the negative vibes in town and such. I wouldn't spoil it for you by saying the crux of the story or the climax but all I would say is that the story is layered and is a must-read for literature enthusiasts! I can vouch that the reader will be at the edge of the seat throughout the book.
I would rate it 4.2/5 for the following reasons.
Pros
1. Good english

2. Medium paced and I completed it in less three days.

3.  neatly developed character
4. well researched information
The only Con is that there are a bunch of spelling mistakes and grammatical errors. But overall, a good read!

A tale of deaths with a mysterious aura. A holy Pujari is found dead weirdly right at the temple complex where he has served all his life. There is an apparent plot behind his death which is deemed a murder by Aghodi Sadhu Chasma baba and his snake charmer fried Pitara. Chasma baba has taken it on himself to maintain the balance of evil in the world and his antics are terribly unholy in this regard.
Pitara and he implicate the local doc and the priests wife in the death!
How does Chasma baba set about to put right Poojari s death?
Benaras is discovered nicely and the images in the book add to the vividness of the imagination. The philosophical insights are also well thought of.

Sadly the book is filled with numerous spelling mistakes and grammatical errors which at times alters the meaning of the sentences completely making it a headache to read. Book requires severe level of proofreading and editing!
2/5*

Books have become my third eye. The eye which takes me to places unseen before and witness miracles, wonders and many other things happening right in front of me which is just an experience books like these make me feel. Author has very well narrated the beauty of the city Banaras with his narration and pictures in the book. This book speaks on the negative things happening in the city and as the title says, 'Unholy Tales', it kind of creates a curiosity as to how can such evil things happen in this holy city of India.
Author could have made a few more improvements in the pace and narration of the tales delivered to readers.
Overall it was a good experience in reading this short read which I would suggest to the ones travelling to make this one their next read.

Overall ratings- 3.9/5

We all know about the city- Banaras, a City of Temples, people from different parts of our country even international tourists visits this place for it's own attraction. This story is based on that city. In a city of Banaras a temple priest suddenly dies a mysteries death. The story is really engaging. Although its really very short but the way the author narrated the whole story and the characters, is really amazing.
The readers could travel and see the beauty of the city of Banaras through this book and some part of the book can make the readers really amazed!
I loved how the author added the beautiful pictures in the book, it made the book more attractive.
The lucid language and the attractive cover is another plus point of the book!

It's a story of the priest of Banaras who was found dead. Who killed him and why?. The atmosphere in Banaras seems inappropriate. What will be the reason? What does God want to indicate? That what Chashma baba thought. An Aghoda chashma baba and his friend pitara were on a mission to know how did the poojari die?
Well, I liked this book. The plot of the story is different and unusual. I loved how the author built curiosity among readers. The narration of the book is crisp and interesting keeping the reader hooked throughout.
The book is well researched and detailed. The pictures shared by the author are amazing. The book needs more editing. It has many errors which cannot be ignored.
Overall it's a good book. A quick and light read.

Some novels have the potential to be a star, a bestseller. Unfortunately, the idea behind the story doesn’t get executed well and hence this becomes the downfall of the novel. One such book that I am talking about is Anuj Tikku’s Unholy Tales from Banaras. This tale of deaths on the land of Banaras is a disappointment on all forefronts.

I could see that the story had the power to shake me and move me, but the author did not believe in re-editing to the book. If he had, the book would be a 4 star, no doubt. Though I wouldn’t say that everything in it was disappointing. No. The best part I loved about the book was the detailed description of Benaras done lovingly.

Should you read it?
It’s overall an okayish short read.

I was really intrigued by the title. I have always wanted to be on solo trip to Varanasi soo knowing about the city by the author was a plus point for me. The death mystery of the Pandit at the place which was his home and the mystery behind it was good. But as the story continued I started to kind of lost interest due to the numerous grammatical errors. The plot, the characters ,the concept everything was good but the errors was a lot to be many.

The story is about a murder case. A Pujari is found dead.
The author has given a lot of details about the Varanasi.
The story is good, but not the storytelling. This book needs editing.
Though the book is well written, it has many mistakes.
There are many spelling errors. It seems like it is published hastily.
The writing style is simple. The characterization is good. It has a good plot.

The title and the blurb seem interesting but the execution is poor. Starting from spelling mistakes to poor grammar, this book which was very well researched along with colorful pictures lost it's charm. There were numerous creepy and bizarre deaths which made the storyline fresh and unique but apart from pitaras curse none of the chapters stood out

The tales were scary, but it could have been better if there weren't grammatical errors. The writing style is raw only proper drafting is required.
