RAUFFE RADCLIFFE LAID THIS STONE TO LYE AD 1655...so says the mysterious stone laying on Written Stone Lane. When the stone is moved years later, murderous ghosts and ancient spectres are released. The only one that can save the world from murder and destruction is Preston Oldcorn, a 15 year old boy from the North of England and his friends. Written Stone Lane is a fast-paced ghost thriller that will set your heart racing until the very end.
Debated for a long time the rating of this book but ultimately have to go with 3. The horror of the book matched the first and as a woman who definitely had one of those P.E teachers it was truly horrifying to see it put into words and become fear. The writing standard is still brilliant and I found myself enraptured with the words but not so much the plot. I had expected something more instead of a rehash of the first book's problem, the plot of the first book had resolved really well and I would have loved for the end to remain tied. The addition of the leech along with the doors being shut and Preston's resurrection as well as Written Stone's stone was all very jumbled and lacked the cohesive flow of the first book. The flashback of the resurrected family felt jagged and flaky around the ending. I didn't really know what I should have been rooting for in the end. I do think Cold Bath Street would have made a better stand-alone and the second wasn't really necessary as the author made me content with Preston's resurrection and reassertion into Tracey's life.
Perhaps doesn't have the emotional punch or depth of storytelling as Cold Bath Street, and some of the story seemed rushed in places and stretched in others.
That said, I enjoyed the book and once again we delved into Preston's ghostly heritage and the wonderful legend that is Written Stone Lane. I also really appreciated the little historical touches that rooted the novel in a real place and time.
Also, a big plus are the two teenage main characters. I really cared about them and really rooted for them to have a chance of a future together.
Usually sequels don’t hit me as hard as the first books, but this was beautiful. The story was wrapped up beautifully and context was given that was relevant to the first. I’ve recommended these books to absolutely everyone. A.J Hartley is a phenomenal writer and I’ll be reading the rest of his books in the near future
