Rethink...For a Change: Transformed Living Through Transformed Thinking

Rate this book
Where does anxiety come from? Where do bad behaviors start? Why does fear take over? We might say these things come from our jobs, financial circumstances, or challenging people. All these things can be stressful, but they are not the cause of stress, anxiety, and fear. So, what is? Our thoughts are the cause.

When we encounter a situation, our initial thought drives everything. That thought leads to an emotion. The emotion leads to a behavior or action. The behavior or action affects relationships. Then we have the result. The result stems from that first thought. Attempting to change your behavior would be impossible without changing your thoughts. You might change for a week or two, but if you don’t change your thought processes, that behavior will come back. In my years as a therapist, I have walked many people through this transformational process into real life-change.

Romans 12:2 says, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Rethink focuses on replacing harmful mindsets that promote negative emotions like depression, anxiety, fear, and self-loathing with God’s truth. Toxic mindsets fuel negative emotions and produce destructive behaviors. We cannot be truly free of toxicity until we transform our thinking.

This is a great and very helpful book. I felt like I was sitting down with a Christian counselor in person. Like everyone, I have difficult people and situations in my life and need to remember to think differently about them. I can’t change the people and usually not the situation, but I can change how I think and react to them.

When someone with many years of experience in his field writes a book it should reflect knowledge, even expertise. However, there's no guarantee it will speak wisdom. I am happy to say that Rethink...For a Change reflects not only knowledge and expertise, but wisdom as well.

Rick Roepke has written an excellent book that communicates in clear language what it means to "take every thought captive". Rather than falling into the fashionable cliche of "seeking happiness," Dr. Roepke guides his readers to seek health--healthy thoughts leading to healthy behavior. There is so much Scripture referenced in this book that following the truths laid out in the book will result in the reader seeking holiness, which ultimately does result in happiness.

If you struggle with negative thoughts, depression, anxiety, or know someone who does, this book can be a game changer. Get yourself a copy, or buy one for a friend. It really is full of wisdom.

Excellent Read

Dr. Roepke deals with issues we all face at one time or another. His use of personal life stories and practical biblical scripture was refreshing and enlightening. He gave provocative thoughts to ponder on and practical ways to battle Satan and the negative thinking we place ourselves in. This was an excellent purchase and a good reference to fall back on to remind us when we get off track on stinking thinking and the impact it has on us. C. Jenkins
