I picked up this book just out of curiosity during the last visit to the library. I did have some doubts about the relevance as the story seemed to be set in the 1950s. However after reading the book, I feel Devan's style of writing is still very relevant. The way he describes each character and paints the Madras of the 1950s and the day to day problems faced by a middle class family man, links small happenings and builds a story is remarkable. I really liked the subtle humour in Devan's portrayal.

One can easily identify with the main character Sudharsanam's want to move up in life but the inability to do so with a paltry pay, the frustrations of being exploited by a supervisor who extracts every bit of work from him but doesn't give any visibility to the management. What all this makes him do and how he ends up from a clerk to a respectable position is presented very nicely and with subtle humour by Devan.

After reading this book, I feel that Devan is one of the greatest writers in Tamil literature, who somehow did not get the recognition he deserved. Have already picked up the next book - "Justice Jagannathan"

Newly married couples. Middle class family. Faces problems everyday due to arrivals of relatives. Forced to take money from the office. Somehow, he was saved for some time. Then he gets punished by ..... Vada Pazhani Murugan devotee was his boss. What happens in the end is beautifully presented. I read the last portion many times.

Book takes you back to 90's era. Nicely written. Fan of Devan work and this book justifies his work. I listened the book through Audible and its more incredible. I strongly recommend for a casual read.

Sriman Sudarshanam , a wonderful social story by the great writer 'Devan' . This is one of his best stories. Needless to say about his writing ! The way he brings out the plot, the life of a middle-class brahmin who gets married recently, the pricks as-well-as the happiness he enjoys in his life, his ways and means to satisfy his wife's small pleasures, the way he tackles his parents and in-laws, the way he suffers financial problems and the way he tries to solve them, his anxiety and fear every time he deals with the office money, his patience in dealing his immediate boss, the way he gets into the good books of his superior boss, ......so on and so many ! keep thronging in my mind. The simple and beautiful writing of Devan never allows one to keep the book down even for a minute. Such an interesting story, which just makes you feel you are yourself the hero ! Devan is Devan ! Had a great time reading this novel. very nostalgic for me .

An entertaining work that portrays even the most difficult moments in a comic manner. It tracks the life of the central character, who is a clerk, at work and at home. This book also gives a picture of life in pre-independence Chennai, bringing to mind the tramlines and how the city has changed over the years.
