Boot Second Lieutenant Cel Wysoki is home on leave while awaiting logistics officer school when her homeplanet is invaded.
She has no unit yet and not a clue as to how the Army functions. More than that. She is a POG, a “Person Other than Grunt,” a desk-jockey-in-training.”
What now?Link up with the local garrison 100 klicks away? Surrender and wait out the war? Hide out in the mountains and hope for the best?
The Army doesn’t care that she has no training. They have one soldiers always prosecute the war to the best of their abilities.
Does she even have the capability to attempt that?
I am a retired Marine colonel and now a full-time writer living in Colorado Springs with my wife, Kiwi, and infant twin daughters, Danika Dawn and Darika Marie.
I published my first work back in 1978, a so-so short story titled "Secession." Since then, I have been published in newspapers, magazines, and in book format in fiction, political science, business, military, sports, race relations, and personal relations fields. I returned to writing fiction in 2009, and I currently have over 85 titles published, 52 being novels. My novelette, "Weaponized Math," was a finalist for the 2017 Nebula Award, and my novella, "Fire Ant," was a 2018 Nebula finalist. My novel "Integration" was a 2018 Dragon Award finalist, and my novel "Sentenced to War" was a 2021 finalist. I am a USA Today Bestelling writer.
My undergraduate degree was earned at the U. S. Naval Academy (Class of 1979), and I have attended graduate school at U. S. International University and the University of California, San Diego, earning a masters and doctorate. I am a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the US. Naval Academy Alumni Association, and the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America.
I have rather eclectic tastes. I have won awards in photography, cooking, wrting, and several sports, earning national championships in rugby and equestrian events. When I'm not writing, I'm reading, cooking, going to the gym, or traveling. I attend quite a few cons over the course of a year, and love meeting other people who love books.
I write because I love it. I only hope that others might read my work and get a bit of enjoyment or useful information out of my efforts.
As an author, I don't think it is fair for me to rate any other author's books here on Goodreads if that rating is less than five stars. I have certainly read many books that do not deserve five (or four, three, or even two). However, I will not rate any of those here while I am a Goodreads author. Consequently, I will only be listing books that I really like and feel deserve five stars.
Life often has a nasty habit of knocking one for six when least expected. As it did to Cel Wysoki. Cel is afresh out of training logistics lieutenant having s much appreciated short vacation before reporting in for duty again. However, war broke out in Capernica and she knew she had to report in for duty immediately. Except the enemy arrived too quickly and blocked the roads that would have allowed her to do so. A private, though, still under medical care, unintentionally, seems to inspire Cell to start thinking strategically....and Cel is about to impact the scene nobody could have foreseen, least of all Cel herself. The second novella in the boxed set, Call to Arms: Capernica, is an easy, suspenseful read that captures your attention wholly, immersing you in a war scene with excitement brewing and a rising admiration what an ordinary POG can accomplish against all odds. Brilliantly . Enjoy.
I generally am reading three or four books/stories at a time. I found myself stopping other reads to sneak over to read more of this story rather than continue stories that I was bored with. Refreshed, I could go back to the other stories... For a bit. I say well done!
This was a good book filled with lots of action. The main characters were interesting and they explored their action packed world in a really interesting way. Loved the mobile destruction platform they used. Made me think of the old A-Team shows but with no custom builds required as it was ready to go. I enjoyed this book and recommend it.
Brazee strikes again! A thoroughly enjoyable story, memorable characters and plenty of action. If you're looking for a quick read that you can't put down, this will fill the bill nicely
Rather than a story, it felt like a real after action report of a battle. The characters were as lifelike as possible and very believable. This was the second short novel I’ve read by this author and I am looking forward to more.
