She’s not supposed to exist… They’re only stories.

But there’s something in the water.

In the time before man, there were others. Perfect beings of the earth, water, air, and fire. The world was theirs during the unrecorded time. And for a while, there was peace.

To Cora of The Shallows, Princess of the Undines and Captain of The Queen’s Guard, humans have been the enemy ever since the Elemental Fae were banished from The Garden of Eden. For centuries they’ve remained hidden, but now a war is brewing to reclaim what once was theirs, and staying hidden is no longer an option.

Without consent, the Lawless Undines of The Depths have struck a terrifying alliance with another former enemy, and like it or not, Cora must navigate both politics and her pride to save two men from different worlds.

One, a loyal brother-in-arms, and the other, a human soldier destined to lead…if he survives following his heart.

This was such an interesting fantasy-focused spin-off series balance to the first book in the original First Bloods that feels more Sci-Fi. It's all the same world, we have a very significant overlapping character and yet we have a completely different experience seeing the world through Cora's eyes.

This follows The Little Mermaid fairy tale but there are twists and turns that make it so unique...even how Cora gets her legs is so different from the original story and it fits the world and the characters really well.

This book has a ton of action and moves along at a good pace. My only "complaint" is that I prefer fewer exclamation marks, but they completely make sense...there are a lot of scenes with a lot happening so characters literally have to shout. I also really liked how TK distinguished communication styles for water-based creatures by having them "echo" and then those who had a single set of vocal chords spoke.

I received a review copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

A cool take on The Little Mermaid with a nice set-up for a series of dystopian tales.

What a fun book! This is a majestic Little Mermaid retelling. It has twists, turns, drama, and more. Cora is the Princess of the Undines and the Captain of the Queen’s Guard. One foolish mistake (by her people’s standards) in saving a human leads her on an adventure she could have never imagined. Her journey will help her learn more about where her people came from and some of the foolish beliefs they’ve let dictate their lives for so long. Highly recommend this read!

This is book one of the Elemental Wars series and starts with the main character, Princess Cora of the Shallows, being late for her own promotion ceremony with her mother, the Queen of the Undine Water Fae. She is accompanied by her good friend and fellow soldier, Reed, who gets passed over for his promotion, due to being late. His replacement as Captain of the Guard is Mara, who is soon to place both them and their people in the midst of a new war! Water Fae, or should I say mermaids or sirens, and mankind have been enemies for eons, since the beginning of time. To humans, the creatures of the water are seen as monsters, calling sailors into the deep and wrecking their ships and killing them violently.

Unknown to Cora, there is more to her people’s own history that she has never been told by her mother. She’s soon going to find out that there is a lot for her to learn! Her people have remained hidden since the days of the Garden of Eden and their own banishment from it. There are those amongst their numbers, called the Lawless sirens and the Tritons of the Depths, who do not agree with hiding from the humans and they have a new ally in their fight. The Gnome queen, hiding under another name, has got Mara, the Lawless and Tritons to join her in a new war against humans.

The Gnome queen leads an attack against a ship and her minions start to lure all the sailors overboard and kill them. One of the sailors, the ship’s captain, tries to stop them from fighting or leaving the ship, but is attacked by Mara. When Cora tries to stop her, she ends up rescuing the captain and taking him to the shore. Reed has been taken prisoner by Mara and Gnome queen and Cora is told to find the captain, kill him and spill his blood in the waters. She is turned into human form to do this, by magic, and only has three days to complete her mission. The human world she finds herself in, is one with strange controls over movement and people being chipped to control their debt and chances to live.

She is taken in by some strange and powerful technology, but ends up in the hands of the man she is seeking. He takes her to an old friend of his for safety and this is where she finds out about the true story behind the Undine’s banishment from the Garden of Eden and the other Elemental beings, those with power over fire and those of air. The Gnomes have land and the Water fae obviously water. But after the peace following the Gnome War now being broken, others must put their hands in to help the Undine, before the Gnomes take over all of the world. The Gnome queen has created mystical beings and feral humans as part of her army and there are some difficult battle to be won.

Cora finds the Captain is completely different than any other human she has ever been in contact with and she finds she cannot save both him and Reed. Matters are soon out of her hands and she has to try and navigate both politics and her own beliefs, to tackle problems in two different worlds. An insight into Elemental beings and the origins of humans and events from the time of the Garden of Eden. It may be a fairy tale retelling, but the dystopian twist adds a certain flavour to story and makes it fascinating. If you do not like a book inspired by another story, this book is not for you. But if you can appreciate an author taking a story that everyone knows and making it something completely different then you absolutely should read this book!

I will be honest in saying that I didn't expect much from such a short read. The question rang in my head, "how can you possibly tell a good story in so little words?". Well, ask Tracy Korn because she did it! This woman has some serious talent. I actually appreciated the length of it and cannot wait to read the next book.

Let start with the name of the book; Nervous Water. I love a title that is subtle. In this case, those two words were said in one spot of the book only, explaining what it meant and by the end of the book, you realize the title makes so much sense.

The main characters; I can literally go back to my childhoods favorite story, the little mermaid and pin point exactly who each character reminded me of who. Cora, the heroine of the book, a mermaid princess, like Ariel. But instead of the naive fragile mermaid we all love, Cora is a warrior Undine Mermaid. Reed, her friend since childhood and someone she cares a lot about reminds me of Flounder, but not in the way of being a scared little fish. Reed is also a warrior. Both of these characters are very likeable. And what is a little mermaid inspired tale without an evil witch, Mama Luz and a charming prince, Captain Nichloas? Both brilliantly written to love one and hate the other.

I really loved how this story unfolded. Tracy had me hooked from the very first chapter. After a quick background on the characters, enough to let you get to know them, the story took off. It was jam packed with adventure and obstacles for Cora to overcome. I have never read anything like it, a little bit of myths and legends coupled with a dystopian world, some magic beings, and a bible story. All of which very different from what I've ever seen. I still am in awe of how quickly the story unfolded. The author did actually get a lot of information out there without jeopardizing the actual content of the book. It didnt feel rushed like some short books do. I also enjoyed the background story on how everything came to be and it was the foundation of the main story.

All in all, I am very pleased with this book and look forward to reading book two.

Nervous Waters is a dark Little Mermaid retelling (or possibly a more accurate retelling in line with Brothers Grimm LM 🧜‍♀️) Cora is a warrior Undine (child of water) and also a princess (as much as she doesn't want to be 🙈) that gets swept away I'm a brewing battle between humanity and the Gnomes (earth children) 🌏

When the Gnomes and some rogue Endines take down a human ship she gets caught but a human captain spares her. When the Gnomes find out they curse her to kill him and become human or face death.💀 all she needs is one kiss and he dies...but when she finds out she ACTUALLY wants to kiss him and not to kill him things get complicated and dangerous schemes and machinations come to light that mean war amongst all the original elemental species 💣

It's a fast moving novella and I loved the characterisation of the Undines and their culture! I'm not sure how to feel about the gnomes but I'm super intrigued to learn more about the fire and air elementals (Salamanders and Slyphs) respectively 💫

Our protagonist Cora is definitely interesting and relateable and honestly I really like her. Captain Nicholas is funny and humble and again easily likeable. All the characters are fascinating and I'm excited to delve more into this world

Again another great dystopian/fantasy story.
Well written plot and story with great world building happening.
Characters have been fleshed out so well and were interesting to read about.
I really enjoyed this story yet again from the author.
Loving the series so much.

After reading this book, I wanted to write and post this review to share my honest experiences toward the story.

What a creative ‘Little Mermaid’ retelling! I’ve recently been getting into underwater tales, and this is one of the most engaging and exciting ones I have read to date. As a retelling, the base storyline is similar to the fairy tale we all know and love, but at the same time, it is totally different. And it’s such a short book, and creating a mesmerizing tale in so few pages is truly an amazing feat. Definitely recommended to anyone who loves YA fantasy and underwater adventures.

This one was a slow start for me but once it picked up it went full speed ahead. In the beginning it has a very "Little Mermaid" feel to it, but several chapters in, it changed. For me at least. Once this book picks up it becomes fast paced with lots of action. I liked the characters, the good and the "bad" alike. I think there will be a lot of growth with them in the upcoming books. I honestly think Cora will be an awesome warrior type character going forward. This book was quite interesting and I'm looking forward to reading more about the humans and their way of life. Good read!

Honestly, I don’t like the little mermaid, so after the first 20 pages, I wasn’t enjoying it. But it picked up greatly when the two main characters met and fought together. I did enjoy the story but I felt it was too short, too rushed in certain places. I wish the beginning was sped up and the action was spread out more. I want to know more about the fight, and the ending was so rushed that I didn’t feel any satisfaction. I enjoyed the story but wished I read more about it.
Good read, interesting story, just want more information.

I picked this up because the cover and blurb sounded like an intriguing story. I was hooked from the first page and read it all in one sitting. The author has a way with words that allows you to feel like you're right there with Cora, fighting the battle that no one else seems to care about. I adored Cora, Nicholas and even Reed, loved the fairytales woven in the words. It was an amazing read, and an author for me to read more from. I love her way of telling stories. Overall, a solid five stars!

Nervous Water was a very fun book to read! It tells the story of Cora, the princess of the Undines. It is a retelling of the Little Mermaid, but it's still very different! I really liked the characters, especially Cora and Nicholas. The story is really well-written and it is fast-paced. I can't wait to see how the story continues!

This is one of the more unique retellings of the Little Mermaid that I’ve read. It’s dark and set in a dystopian world that I liked. It’s fairly short so it’s a quick read but there’s so much packed into it that there’s a surprising amount of depth to the story! It’s suspenseful and intriguing. I definitely recommend this book!

Nervous Water is the second prequel to Bad Seed, the first book in the Dystopian / Urban Fantasy series, First Bloods. This is an entertaining story of the Elementals and Cora, Princess of the Undines. The characters are well defined and the storyline is well written, with betrayal, murder, and danger.

To say I was super excited to give this a read from the blurb alone would be the understatement of the year. It’s a retelling of the little mermaid but with huge twists and added powers at be. You meet Cora who is the daughter of the queen but also caption of the guard. She strong, smart, and tries be something other than the princess. Then there’s Reed, her trusted friend and fellow warrior. And Nicholas the human that turns their world upside down. It’s an epic journey with loads of adventure and mysteries that keep you reading. A war is about to start and it’s up to Cora and Nicholas to stop it. It was beautifully written. Sucks you in right from the start. I definitely can’t wait to read more by this author!!

Seriously a great retelling

The setting blew me away. I had never thought there would be a retelling of The Little Mermaid quite like this. My only issue with it is that it's too short! I was engaged from the get go and couldnt put it down.

A second prequel to First Bloods series
*
This a more sci-fi fantasy retelling of the little mermaid, which I quite enjoyed. There is magic and advanced technology.
*
There are the Elementals, four races of fae whose power came from air, fire, water, or earth. They power was also theirs to guard. They were on Earth long before humanity arrived and while there is an uneasy peace amongst them, the Elementals are starting to regret letting humanity roam free across the Earth. The rebels in the fae are the Lawless Undine who love to make trouble, don`t respect boundaries, and constantly interreact with the humans, consequences be damned.
*
Cora is an Undine. They watch over the water, and she is their princess and future queen. She has also just been made Captain of the Guards of the Shallows. Reed is a fellow guard. Mara is a fellow guard and leader of the Lawless. Cora is lured to the Gnome Queen to save Reed where the queen works her magic and makes her human. 3-day deadline to make a human Captain whom we had saved earlier kiss her of his own free will, which would kill him. Evil witch.
*
Nickolas, the Captain, is a clever man and when she appears back in his life, begins to realize that they weren`t all just stories. He and Cora work together to bring the Undines and humanity together to fight the true enemy, the Gnome Queen.

For me it's 3,5 stars. I enjoyed it even though it was short.

I liked the fact that contrary to the little mermaid she do not fall immediately in love with the prince in this story the Captain but is going to see him again due to circumstances.

I liked the fact that when she goes on earth she has difficulty to comprehend and talk to them, and the fact she doesn't know their basic notion like time was interesting.

I'm not a fan of retelling... but this dark twist of "the little mermaid" is an amazing read. The descrition and world building make us dive deep into this story. It has a lot of drama and suspense with twists: the author took an old fairy tail and made it into a whole new read.
I can't wait to read the next book !!
