Letting Go

"Hey, want a beer?"

You'd think it would be a simple question, right? But what I've come to find is that with Nick, nothing is ever simple. We were kids back in 1973 when he moved in next door. It was temporary for him--he was on his way to stardom with his band. I was waiting to find a nice accountant to marry in my father's business, but after that summer, the life that was planned out for me was abandoned and I moved on to chasing my own music career.

In the 80's and 90's, you'd think we'd have figured something out, but paths have a way of changing directions and ours had a way of crossing that even we couldn't map out. The 2000's weren't much different, come to think of it.

Through band beginnings and break-up's, marriage and divorce, sickness and music festivals, all I can figure is that whatever this is, is undefinable, and unbreakable, regardless of how many times we need to let go of the circumstances that bring us together. What I am certain of is that just when I think I've got things figured out, that path is going to change directions on me again, and somehow, Nick is always going to be on it.

I loved this book. It kept me captivated from start to finish. The characters are awesome and even though they might be totally out of your league, you find yourself rooting for them, wanting good things to happen for each of them separately and together. I felt like I was backstage watching this story. I will admit there were two places where I cried. I will warn you: don't finish this book right before going to bed. Plan something fun, or someone to talk to! But it is a perfect ending to this story. Do yourself a favor and read this book!

Tear jerker, second chance Rockstar romance that covers a lifetime from 1973 when a young, fairly established musician unknowingly meets the love of his life while working on a song on his back deck in Laurel Canyon. 40 years later, years apart, while they both chased musical careers (she constantly lets him go to chase the excesses of the lifestyle ); through accidental pregnancy and a secret baby, to years together after he gets brave enough to face exactly what together forever with her means, to the heartbreaking death of one of them after years in and out of each other's lives....this made me cry so freaking much. So, after Flipping the Record, I'm on a Heather J. Bennett binge; on to search out the next one!

Wow, I am sooo glad I finished this story this afternoon instead of before bedtime!!! I've been having intermittent tears since I read the last part of section 3 and the ending in section 4 blew me away!!! It has been a long time since I have read such a beautiful story, and it was much more than 5 stars for me. This is the second book from the 1970s musical world Ms. Bennett has written and I will be reading 2 more of her books. Thanks, Ms. Bennett!!!
