We live in a divided and difficult world where many young people suffer with mental health issues caused by a wide variety of factors. We can work within the existing education system to help the young people in our care, not as healthcare professionals or social workers, but as teachers. A handbook for teachers, Strictly Positive Teaching suggests ways in which professionals can tweak their practice to make it more positive and kinder for the students in their care, but within Strictly Positive boundaries. In this way teachers can create a more nurturing classroom environment for everyone, themselves included. Strictly Positive Teaching is arranged according to the DfES Teaching Standards, with the key addition of Relationship Building – an essential tool in any teacher’s kitbag. Key principles harnessing attention-seeking behaviour to manage the classroom; being vigilant for positives in students’ work and behaviour; and working with, rather than against, their natural rhythms.
