First off, I enjoyed that the "normal" world was set in the mid-1800s rather than modern times. The strange, fantasy world was also well-constructed and unique, making it captivating. However, this was an allegorical tale that was really heavy-handed, which took away from the enjoyment of the work. The charcters were also kind of flat, making it less engaging than it could have been.

A tale set in the time of the pioneers , two sets of youth end up being spirited away to a different world, where they encounter different beings and the one great Ispri. Great world building, quite allegorical, and at times I was puzzled by the motivations of the “other” side, but well written .

Not only did this book give a vivid fantasy story, it also introduced me to an area of the country that I have never explored. I gave this book to a pre-teen reader after I read it. She agrees with me that reading A Light Through the Cave was like enjoying a layer cake with sprinkles in the frosting.

This is a beautiful analogy. The rocks really cry out, and we learn to love Ispri, and experience real evil, all while just starting out in Mammoth Cave for a picnic.
