Thanks to Kathy and Larry Troxel for making the memorable geography songs available through several online sources and book review on GoodReads.com I am familiar with these songs from home school days when our family moved from the US to Gabon, West Africa. At that time, I thought it important for my three school-aged children learn about African geography while we lived in Libreville, 1989-92. The Troxel geography songs made learning fun at home, in class and on-the-go!
Kathy Troxell’s Geography Songs have been an inspiration for my family to learn more about world geography for three generations. I enjoyed the snappy tunes, often played the songs at home and when my family traveled by car during our six years in Africa. I am now am sharing 'Geography Songs' with my grandchildren.
The songs are lively and create curiosity about our global community, as well as make it simple to remember the appropriate pronunciation of country names. The geography kit provides supplemental maps with numbers to make it easy for instructors to reinforce ideas about specific geographic locations. Students are encouraged to learn about the diversity of the many nations that make up African and Asia continents.
Thank you to Kathy Troxel for making the original Africa song (1990) available online. Now that I am a Grandmother, I am glad to be able to purchase your Geography Songs and CD to share with school-aged children, including my grandchildren. The original song lists all countries that my children learned so many years ago all in one song, although some country names have changed in the past 20 years.
The geography of Africa, unlike other parts of the global community, has had a few changes since 1990. New African countries include Eritrea (1993) and South Sudan (2011). However, I find that it is easier to enjoy the complete 1990 song with an added explanation that: - Zaire, the former Belgian Congo, in 1997 was renamed the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC); - Tanskei is now incorporated as a Xhosa Province of South Africa; and - Cabinda is classified by the United Nations as an oil-rich enclave of Angola, much as western Sudan includes the oil-rich Darfur Province”
This is a compendium of songs to be used as a mnemonic device for learning the names and locations of every country in the world. Great, fun way for young children to learn the basics of world geography.
