There is something beautiful about watching someone with mature faith. Someone whose life is a testament to the One who resides within, whose every action and thought begins with God. Someone who listens for God’s voice and obeys no matter how hard the request.
Dr. Brock Whitman is one such someone. A man whose past is filled with giant regrets and mistake. A man who, in his lowest moments, cried out to God and never looked back. A man who dedicated the rest of his life for caring for “the least of these.”
So when that same man gets a second chance at love with a woman who loves Jesus as much as he does, has her own servant’s heart, and offers support in his work, I was happy for Brock.
And then God asks him to do one of the hardest things he’s ever had to do—he asks Brock to give that woman up.
Even reading this story, my selfish, human nature was pushing against everything God had asked Brock to give up. Why does he have to sacrifice his future happiness for someone who has never given him any grace?
But in the end, one sentence sums up this story. To add a little context, this is Brock’s thought after speaking with one of his daughters on the phone. “Gwyneth didn’t stand a chance against the mighty God he served who had just shown the limits He would go to save a broken soul.”
Because it is only through God we are able to set aside ourselves and show others the full extent of the love of God.

Brock is a man who loves GOD. He accepted Jesus into his life and found much pleasure serving him. Jesus made the ultimate sacrifice for us. Brock wholeheartedly believed that GOD was telling him that he had one sacrifice of his own to make.
Have you ever felt GOD calling you to make a sacrifice? Have you thought of making a sacrifice for GOD?
I found myself wondering if I could. Does that make me a weak Christian? A bad one? We each have a Christian journey we must take when we make the decision to follow Christ. We have to give up our old ways and walk down a new path.
I didn't read the earlier books in this series. So I didn't get to read about Brock and his prior journey. But I loved the Brock in this book. He was a LOVING BROCK. He gave so much to others so I'm not surprised how his life was blessed.

Joan shares her life with Rene’, her husband of forty years. Together they reside in Prattville, Alabama, a quaint city with southern charm and hospitality.

This is the very first novel that I have read by Joan Deneve, but it absolutely will not be my last. Loving Brock is one of the best stories I have ever read. The characters are endearing and so well written. The plot is highly engaging and so fast-paced. And, the setting is wonderful. I absolutely adored the medical clinic in Africa with its unique and amazing cast of characters.
Hebrews 10:36 (ESV) states, “You have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised.” I quote this verse because Loving Brock reminds me of the sentiment expressed in this verse. In Hebrews 10, Paul explains how it is important for us to endure until God calls us back home. Loving Brock illustrates to the reader what it looks like to endure. The main character, Brock, is in his sixties. He has lived a lot of life in his 60+ years: marriage, divorce, children, jail, missions work in Africa, etc. Brock didn’t always believe in God. In fact, it took something truly awful before he realized the love and forgiveness of God. But, once he did find a true relationship in God, Brock has been living every single day of his life as God directs. He has been enduring for God.
What I love so much about Brock is his realistic character. Even in his 60s, knowing all he knows and having experienced all he has experienced at God’s hand, he still has a moment or two of doubt, insecurity, and confusion. He even asks, “God, why?” It proves that no matter the age, we will always have personal trials and tribulations. Because Brock’s faith in God is genuine and strong — something acquired over time and through endurance — Brock accepts what God has in store for him even when he doesn’t like it very much. He prays. He reads his Bible. He wrestles with where God is leading his steps. Instead of fighting and being angry though, Brock always concludes that God’s will for him is the only will for him. Of all the amazing aspects to this novel, Brock’s model of what a solid Christian looks like is my favorite part. With God’s daily help, I hope to be an enduring Christian like Brock is in Loving Brock.
I didn’t even cover 1/16th of the topics I could have discussed in this post. This book is just so layered. There’s romance, loss, forgiveness, acceptance, miracles, etc. Loving Brock is replete with excellent talking points of all subject matters. To write a proper review would have take days. Suffice it to say, Loving Brock is a phenomenal story that I highly recommend. I loved every minute of this book, and I am sad my time with Brock is over. If you are looking for an excellent, fast-paced, captivating story then this is the book for you!

What a fascinating, thought-provoking book! Loving Brock started out with a journey to a remote village in Angola, Africa where the chief made an inappropriate request regarding Joy and then a dangerous journey over a rickety bridge during a rainstorm.
Author Joan Deneve has written another fascinating story filled with adventure, hard decisions, and the grace of God. While this story does not have anywhere near the level of action in the first book of the series, Saving Eric (which I enjoyed as well), it held my interest through to the end and was hard to put down.
The characters were unusual in the fact that Brock and Joy were both in their 60s. It made a nice change from the many stories that are out there about the 25-34-year-old crowd (which I also enjoy). Due to their maturity, Brock and Joy handled things differently than most of the younger characters do and I appreciated the way that they were willing to have frank discussions even when the subject matter was difficult.
There was a discussion between Brock and Moses reflecting back on when Moses came to know Jesus as his Savior. Not to give any spoilers, suffice it to say this resulted in a lively discussion between my husband and me about what the Bible says about this situation. I’m not sure I agree with the advice Brock gave to Moses, but it did not in any way detract from my enjoyment of the book.
I really loved how Brock was such a changed man from earlier in his life. The way he went from living selfishly to following God, even when it was not easy, was beautiful and challenging. Joy was a joy and had overcome trials and difficulties herself, and came out shining brightly for the Lord.
Loving Brock contains a strong and clear message of salvation.
Sweat streamed down Brock’s temples and into his close-cropped beard. He took a moment to catch his breath. He’d learned long ago that God didn’t always make things easy and effortless, and he’d quit expecting him to.
Instead, he strove to be grateful for favor and blessings and to be gracious when things went wrong.

Wow. That is the first word that came to mind when I finished reading this book. It is inspiring, faith driven, full of emotion, and a true picture of what it means to follow God no matter the circumstances. First I want to say how refreshing it was to have characters that were a little older than I am used to reading. They are not old (they're only 60), but they have a more mature faith because of everything they had been through in their life. I felt like Brock and Joy were part of my church family, teaching me and inspiring me as the story went on. Their faith just amazed me, and I can honestly say that I'm not sure I could have done the same things they had without fighting God about it. I won't say exactly what so it doesn't spoil the story for you, but wow (there's that word again!). This book pierced my heart and made me look at life in a different way. But isn't that what mature Christians are there for? To help you, guide you, provide Godly examples in your life? Thank you Brock and Joy for setting such a beautiful example.
Beautiful example aside, they both had their issues before their mission began in Angola. I actually am glad the author shared their journeys throughout the story, because it showed a true picture of God's grace and the power of redemption. God is calling ALL of us to come to him, no matter what our backgrounds. God can change people - as evident with Brock in this story. I actually enjoyed seeing them as they are in the present tense, before getting glimpses of their past. It allowed me to first, look at them without judgement (because let's face it, we as Christians tend to do that every once in awhile) on their past, and second, I became even more amazed once I learned about their "previous life" to see the person they really were today.
The other fun aspect of this book was seeing the work and life of a missionary. Missions has always had a special place in my heart and I love reading about it. I was shocked in the very first chapter of the book of how the local people looked upon Joy. It certainly opened my eyes to some of the things that Christians on the missions field have to endure. Whether you are interested in missions, a mature faith, or a powerful story of devotion to the Lord, this is a book you need to get your hands on. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Missionary work can be a sacrifice but when you are called to it, it is very rewarding. Brock hears the call and goes to Africa to help the villages that are in need of medical treatment. I loved reading about the adventures he had and the description of the places he visited. The author does a good job of making you feel like you are there with him as he treats patients. Brock is a wonderful character filled with compassion. I know there must have been times when it was hard for him but God surrounds him with patience and endurance.
Joy was a delight to know. I loved that her age didn't stop her from doing what God told her to do. When I think of missionaries I always envision younger people who are excited about a new adventure. I could relate to Joy so much since I'm close to her age. Her desire to serve is contagious and she fits in well with the others.
Brock and Joy work well together and it seems like they sense what the other needs as they work closely with the people in the villages. I especially liked it when something happens to Joy and the author shows how much Brock has come to care for Joy. It is a well written scene and I liked how their characters start to share feelings for each other. Joy doesn't know a lot about Brock. What happens when something from his past is revealed? Can she look past it or will it change how she feels about him?
As the author starts to reveal Brock's past, I felt how wonderful it is to know that God forgives and is ready to give second chances. Brock's story is filled with pain, guilt and redemption. I loved how he shared with Joy his painful past and how he came to know Jesus. The story is emotional and I loved how the author draw readers in with characters that share real life problems. Brock faces a had decision that will test his faith and trust in God.The author has written a story that is powerful and shows how forgiveness can set you free. It is one of the best stories I've read about second chances, sacrifices and trusting God.

This is the third in this author's series entitled "The Redeemed Side of Broken". However, it can be read as a stand alone and thoroughly enjoyed. I had not read the previous two, but upon reading this book, I will definitely go back and read the others! The best word to express my thoughts is "Wow"! A fabulous, inspirational book overflowing with the true meaning of Christianity. The underlying theme throughout was how we need to follow God regardless of all else going on in our lives. Whatever happens when we follow His plans , will leave us happy and satisfied, even though the path to get there may be filled with trials and deep tribulations.
The main characters were unique in today's fiction. They were mature adults beginning their sixties. Both Joy and Brock were described in a vivid , realistic way that immediately pulled you into their story. I could feel their every hurt , desire and challenge. They were mature Christians who each had a past, one that neither was proud of. But, with the Lord's help, they were able to fight their demons to become victorious in their faith. The depth of this faith is something that I greatly admired !
The plot is fast paced with unexpected shocks around every corner. The reader is kept on the edge of her seat, as these tense situations arise. I have to say that I became angry at all that God was throwing at these two wonderful people and had the old question, "Why does God allow these terrible things happen to good Christians?" Well, this book explained it well.... tough situations and battles within make us stronger in our faith.
This novel is definitely a winner in Inspirational Fiction! I was left in deep thought , searching my soul and examining my life. Could I ever have this depth of faith?

Both Joy and Brock were described in a vivid , realistic way that immediately pulled you into their story. I could feel their every hurt , desire and challenge. They were mature Christians who each had a past, one that neither was proud of. But, with the Lord's help, they were able to fight their demons to become victorious in their faith. The depth of this faith is something that I greatly admired !

This novel is definitely a winner in Inspirational Fiction! I was left in deep thought , searching my soul and examining my life. Could I ever have this depth of faith?

Loving Brock was one of the most inspirational faith-based novels I've ever read. It touched my heart in a way that no other novel has.
As the story of Brock and Joy unfolds, God asks the unimaginable of Brock. Can Brock make the sacrifices God asks of him with a willing and submissive heart?
The novel is set in Africa and the author did an amazing job depicting life at the compound where Brock runs a medical hospital. Brock's love of God is tested when his ex-wife suffers from a stroke. There are years of distrust, memories of a horrible marriage and a lack of forgiveness between them.God moves beyond anything Brock could imagine, answering years of prayer, but can he do what God asks of him or is the sacrifice too great?.
The story has a sweet romance, but is laced with heartache and trust in the knowledge that God works for good in the lives of those involved. The ending wrapped up nicely, but with a twist that I didn't see coming. Get out the tissues before reading, as you'll definitely need them.

Beautiful Finish
The end of this series gave me all the closure I was hoping for in that honest and intimate style the author has. If you read the first book you can't but help love Brock, and though he was already living his happily ever after I secretly wanted him to have his own second chance romance. That is all I can say without spoilers, but it is wonderful to get updates on previous characters from the series as we journey with Brock through the twists and turns of God's plan for his life. I laughed, cried, wanted to throttle a few characters at times, and finished with that heartfelt sigh of contentment that greets you at the bittersweet end of a well-told story. For fans of realistic romance who aren't afraid of the hard questions that will be asked of Brock, and through him, of the reader as well, you will be sucked in from the first chapter.

I’m just going to say right out that I loved this series! I found them nearly impossible to put down. So many of the characters have become what feel like real-life friends, and Brock Whitfield has joined Jan Karon’s Father Tim on a pedestal I never thought Father Tim would share with anyone!
I devoured all the details about life as a medical missionary in Angola. I laughed and cried with the characters as they struggled and loved and came to know God in ways they never imagined. But most of all, I found myself begging God to grow my faith and to grant me the grace to know Him as several of the characters did. I was sad to see in the author’s note that the series is finished, and I desperately hope she will write more in a similar vein. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the entire series, and I highly recommend you start with book 1!

Joan Deneve is a new author to me and definitely will more by her. This is a 3rd in the series so will have to read the first two books. Can they find love again? Loved all the family members especially Ellie and her twins babies. It was long book but it needed to be, after starting reading it I was very interested in it. Far and away one of the most compelling, poignant and beautiful novels I’ve had the honor of reading. Loving Brock will immediately draw you in and hold fast with excellent pacing, engaging characters and a well-developed storyline and unfolds effortlessly. Simply said - I enjoyed everything about this novel!
This new to me author has found her way to the top of my TBR list – I definitely want more from her! This book’s themes and compelling faith message will stick with me for a long, long time; and give me much food for thought and reasons to consider my own choices.

My Review
Loving Brock is the third book in a series . I have not read the previous books in the series but was still able to read this story without alot of confusion. This story is set in Africa where the characters are serving like missionaries in a medical capacity. Brock and Joy are both older . I found Joy to be a brave woman to be older and deciding to give up her comfortable life for one that was not easy adjusting to . This story showed how trust in God is a big thing that Christians need when things take a twist. Nice read. This is a feel good read. Joy and Brock meet in Africa in a mission. They get to know each other and fall in love but then life back in the United States hits and they need to clear some things up in their own lives before they can get to know each other better. I enjoyed the way that the author kept this story moving. I liked Joy and Brock and many of the people at the mission. I received a copy of this book from Celebratelit for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will.

Rounding out Deneve’s contemporary trilogy The Redeemed Side of Broken with Saving Eric or Healing Ellie, here’s the final story of the mission hospital in Africa. We met Joy and Brock in the first two books and wondered if there could be a romance between these older adults. Indeed, there is, but it’s threatened in dire ways by events from their past and their struggle to be in God’s will. Deneve knows how to pull at your heart strings and make you realize that God’s way is always best.

As a reader of this book I felt awe through many moments of this novel, I couldn’t imagine being in Africa. It was wild and untouched in this book, in a manner that also a reader to be transported to the villages as a missionary. Though a work of fiction this book will make you truly have emotions and thoughts that bring you closer to God.
