How do you thrive in the era of disruption? Reinvent.
Change is everywhere and coming for us fast. This isn’t breaking news. Yet despite knowing this―seeing the impact on our businesses and livelihoods―our human instinct is to resist. Instead of choosing change, we choose the status quo and ride it off a cliff.
It needn’t be this way. What if we could see change as good? In The Reinventionist Mindset, business transformation expert Joe Jackman repositions change as a force to be embraced. Raised in a time of civil disruption―himself transformed from designer to executive and ultimately Reinventionist―Jackman has catalyzed some of the most remarkable transformations of the 21st century. In this book, he gives readers the rare opportunity to go behind the scenes and learn the human how of kickstarting growth and relevance: Dave & Busters, from down and nearly out to spectacular IPO; the surprising reinvention of a New York institution, what Bloomberg Business Week called “Duane Reade’s Miracle Makeover”; Flow Water, a bold new take on a tired category; and the exciting reemergence of Staples. Jackman reveals the secret sauce of successful reinvention alongside analysis of transformations that failed.
The Reinventionist Mindset is a unique, human-centric approach to transformation, a how to for those on a journey to their most powerful and keenly aware the time to move is now.
Was asked to read this for work. Not my thing but I'm sure it is for some people. So so jargon-y, and you don't actually learn how he executed half of the huge projects he writes about.
Also in over 230 pages, he explains dozens of companies, executives, partners, and people he's worked with over a long career in Canada and across the USA -- and he mentions a grand total of four (4) women. Cool cool cool.
The Reinventionist Mindset is a how-to guide to reinvent a company to achieve stretch financial and operational goals. A nine-step playbook clearly articulates the activities and decisions required to complete the process. Five principles complement the approach and provide the “human how” to transform a company successfully. These attitudes, relationships and behaviours are themes that bring the roadmap and case studies to life.
The author presents a convincing case for the essential role people play in successful change – “transformation is fundamentally a human endeavour with a business consequence.” In fact, the Reinventionist Mindset principles include many change management best practices, including creating a compelling case for change, engaging people through participation to garner buy-in and ownership, and aligning rewards with progress and goal achievement.
The author’s conversational style and passion for sharing lessons learned make for an interesting and engaging read. He is a good storyteller with a teacher’s eye for highlighting key points and success requirements. Jackman is most riveting when he shares personal reflections on setbacks that have shaped his expert knowledge and practical wisdom. You can sense the hours of review and post-analysis that led to his insights.
I recommend the Reinventionist Mindset for leaders and their teams that are looking for a clear path to a better version of their company to achieve stretch goals. If this is you, as the author says, "never wait."
I picked up The Reinventionist Mindset because I was fascinated and inspired by the work Joe and his firm (Jackman Reinvents) has done in the past few years. I wanted to understand the mindset and the process involved to gather consumer centred insights and converting them into tangible strategic action. The book delivered exceptionally well on all my metrics.
This book is a great resource for business and marketing leaders who have the feeling that they need to change their business model. The book offers a smart framework, plenty of case examples, and step-by-step instructions on how to implement the framework.
