This gem of a book, now available in an updated paperback edition, sparkles with diamonds, rubies, and exceptional examples of the jeweler’s art. Featured are exquisite early medieval pieces and superb examples of jewelry design from the renaissance and Art Nouveau periods to twentieth-century treasures and right up to the present. Outstanding photographs illustrate not only rare precious stones but also elaborate techniques such as chasing, enameling, and cameo. Famous jewels are featured alongside rings, brooches, pendants, earrings, and tiaras, all revealing the beauty and technical virtuosity of their makers.
An informative, richly illustrated beginner's guide to the breathtaking history of jewellery. A fascinating read for someone who's always loved jewels from afar.
I visited the newly opened jewelry section of V&A last September to see Victoria’s coronet and the other treasures. I couldn’t get the companion book while in the U.K. so I was glad to see this was available. This was a nice overview of the collection and different types of jewels and techniques, but I was hoping to see more of the treasures housed in the museum. If I had seen this book in London, I would have passed. I love to review catalogs of exhibitions I’ve attended to bring back memories of the beautiful items I’ve seen.
