Where Helen Lies

Rate this book
THE SILENT SCREAM

There it is again…the nightmare that takes her down endless halls, running, running for her life…the scarred sightless face that stares up at her, only a silent scream from the truth.

Who is she? The letter in the tacky straw handbag she carries says H. Carter. Helen? Helen. The spectacular diamond rings says Rich. The ill-fitting wedding ban says Married. And the voice ringing in her head says “Run!”

WHERE HELEN LIES -- a stunning novel of romance, intrigue and cliff-hanging suspense!

What a cute little gem. It kind of brings to mind a Nancy drew from my childhood, though it is a guy doing the investigation upon trying to help a girl with amnesia. I am a sucker for amnesia books. Was in the adult section, but could pass for YA which I do read once and awhile so it's OK. No reviews for this one, so hopefully mine will make a difference here.

Usually I find vintage stories published in the 70s entertaining and well-written but this one was disappointing. I was surprised because Foley seems to be a popular author of the time (having published over 30 books), writing both for youth and adults. While the story idea was generally interesting - an opulent woman with amnesia (Helen) running from an imminent but unknown danger. She knows someone is after her but is lost and vunerable and at the mercy of any one who tries to help her, good intentions or not. I gave the book one star because Foley did offer a surprise regarding the story's antagonist near the end that she actually hinted at part way through the story but I ignored.

I think I missed some of the clues about the antagonist because the writing became so tedius almost from the beginning . Foley repeated over and over again the details of the case that had been collected thus far at each introduction of a new character. I skipped full pages of writing due to the repetition. The book is noted as being a Suspense-Romance but it is really just a mystery with minimal suspense. There is a hint of a developing romance throughout the story, and other men who are in love with Helen but that is about it. Overall her character development is quite shallow in this story.

I may have just picked the wrrong book as my introduction to this author. I might give one of her other books a read and hope for something better.

Heiress suffers amnesia and struggles to untangle the web which caused her mind to forget even as she is identified by 2 different men who claim to love her.
