This publication in two self-contained volumes is the culmination of several years research and development. The copy has been prepared by consultants acting on behalf of the British Government's Property Services Agency. The "Landscape Design Guide" is presented in two A4 volumes incorporating many black and white or line illustrations plus eight full pages of colour. Updating and superseding earlier and dispersed records of the subject, these two volumes provide a source of reference and inspiration for any person concerned with, or working within, the management or design of landscape. Volume 1 brings together an appraisal of the principles of planting design and includes practical advice on plant selection and planting techniques. Sections cover the subject from the broad appraisal of land, conditions for growth, alternative approaches to planting design, simple description of physiological requirements, through to detailed examination of design with trees, shrubs, ground cover, climbers, hedges, grasses and herbaceous plants.
