David Vanderpool, MD, CEO, Medical Director of LiveBeyond

Dr. Vanderpool is a trauma surgeon who specializes in tropical medicine in the developing world. He received his bachelor's degree from Abilene Christian University, graduated from medical school from Texas Tech University School of Medicine, and completed his surgical residency at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas.

Dr. Vanderpool and his wife, Laurie, have been married since 1981 and have three children.

Borne out of the Vanderpool's family ministry, they established LiveBeyond, an international humanitarian aid nonprofit organization, in 2005. LiveBeyond was established as a 501(c)(3) organization to minister to the needs of victims of natural and man-made disasters and to relieve the suffering of those trapped in extreme poverty.

His medical practice, Lave MD, was created to fund LiveBeyond. Dedicated to using his talents for the benefit of the poor, Dr. Vanderpool closed his medical practice for up to a week of each month while serving in developing countries such as Mozambique, Ghana, Honduras and Haiti.

In April of 2013, Dr.Vanderpool permanently closed his private practice to focus full attention to LiveBeyond. He and his wife Laurie moved to Haiti full-time in early May 2013 to support the Live Beyond Base's establishment and expand the mission efforts.

The LiveBeyond base of operations in Thomazeau, Haiti, has a surgical hospital, a church, a school and a demonstration farm. LiveBeyond supplies clean water to the surrounding region, daily nutritional support for 3200 hungry children and complete medical care for hundreds of pregnant women.

Wow. This book is such a good read. It follows the series of events that lead up to Dr. David Vanderpool and his wife, Laurie moving to Haiti to be full time missionaries with the organization they founded, LiveBeyond. It was challenging, encouraging, and life changing. The book is filled with both God given successes and challenges of living missionally and challenges the reader to delve deep to find how they too can live beyond and advance the Kingdom of God!

I enjoyed reading this book and learning about the author's upbringing and spiritual walk with God. The author includes the thoughts and feelings that wrestled his heart and mind, which really help the reader understand the tugging of his heart. I was able to relate to the inner voice and be empathetic while reflecting on how I would feel in such a situation when we know in our heart we have a higher calling. Walking in obedience is sometimes challenging and the author outlines his journey throughout the chapters. The author encourages the reader to see through the eyes of compassion. Each part of the journey made me think of what I would do if I were in his shoes. A few scripture verses that kept coming to my mind while reading were from Luke 6:38, Colossians 3:23-24, and Proverbs 4:23 To whom much is given, much is expected. I like how the author put a short quote at the beginning of each chapter. Overall, this read was a very inspiring and well-written testimony.
