Ah Boy!

Rate this book
Ah Boy! is Alan Stevenson’s first novel and is a comedic and bawdy farce set somewhere in rural England. Joe Wilkie is a simple country lad, immensely likeable but oh so incredibly naïve and totally innocent of the ways of the world. In fact, the world to Joe doesn’t much exist beyond his home village of Blessham. Life hasn’t been kind to Joe, at all, but he retains an attitude and optimism that would put most people to shame. However, things get much, much worse for him when both the woman he loves and his arch enemy convince him to grow something at his place of work that isn’t, shall we say, legal, and when those ‘plants’ are discovered Joe’s world is turned completely upside down. Join Joe in this hilarious and ribald romp through English country life where molehills, welly wanging, Morris men, rugby match brawls, excessive flatus, monstrous nobility, sexual promiscuity and cannabis cultivation (it would seem) are just a normal way of life.

Joe has a mother who left him and a drunk for a father. Being left to fend for himself, he works as a gardener for a horrible woman who takes every chance to humiliate him for his uneducated mind. Nevertheless, Joe accepts his lot in life, hoping to marry Meg. The story highlighted the ability of one human to take advantage of another, but at the same time, I appreciated Joe's ability to look on the sunny side. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys seeing how the power of positivity can win in the end.

This book is a charmingly silly escape into the fun fictional world of Joe Wilkie. He's a sweet character, especially with his innocent outlook on life and his limited vocabulary, and I loved reading about how he always seemed to be in the wrong place at the wrong time with hilarious results!

A tale of Joe Wilkie, a naive guy that gets in trouble with the law by mistake. Joe himself takes you on a journey of how it came about. Wrote in a slight illiterate manner (on purpose of course), you feel sorry for Joe. You laugh, you smile, you facepalm.. this story is endearing. Just like a lonely guy who stops and talks to you in the street and you can't get away! It is the exact type of story that could make it to the big screen. Looking forward to Stevenson's next novel!
