The fourth book in the acclaimed Queen of Spades Thriller Series featuring former Italian mob boss Eva Santella. When an American girl goes missing on spring break in Cabo San Lucas, her desperate mother turns to the Queen of Spades for help. Drunk tourists on spring break are a dime a dozen in the popular resort town, but nobody who lives there wants to help find the missing girl. Including the police. Eva finds that nothing is as it seems on the Baja Peninsula. If she is going to find the girl, dead or alive, Eva must travel a twisted and dangerous path and risk it all.
Kristi Belcamino is a USA TODAY bestselling author, an Agatha, Anthony, Barry & Macavity, award finalist, a newspaper cops reporter, and an Italian mama who makes a tasty biscotti.
Once again Kristi Belcamino has written a fast-paced, emotional story starring Eva Santella. Eva goes to Mexico to aid a mother whose daughter disappeared during spring break. Eva's vulnerabilities come to the forefront more than previously. Her character has truly evolved in this novel and I look forward to reading the next chapters of her life and work. This was an outstanding read...but, as usual..too short!
I received an ARC of this book from the author. Here are my thoughts: Well, Ms. Belcamino has outdone herself in this one! ‘Our’ Queen of Spades, Eva, goes to Mexico to find a girl who has gone missing, presumably kidnapped, and probably being sold into trafficking. We get a look into the Cartel’s involvement, as well as some of their infighting. The good and bad in the local policía. Exciting chases through desert terrain in a Jeep, a Hummer, on foot. Lots of bullets flying, knives, hand-to-hand combat trickery. My kind of action! There are moments, though, that tell us who Eva really is: “…sometimes there were moments so beautiful in life that it almost hurt.” BTW, this story leads into her latest Gia book, Stone Cold.
THE ACE OF CLUBS One is drawn to the strength and courage she shows, twenty three days she has had a meal, then she exercises. A mantra of counting, to occupy her thoughts, her soul was hers, and always would be, that he could not take. Eve landing in Cabo San Lucas, a meeting with the mother, her daughter Hayden has been missing for two weeks, was Eve’s mission. Telling the mother to get her act together and to fight for her daughter. The story is compelling, your emotions are high, the captured girl hasn’t spread her wings, to life yet. The story draws us, as reader we too are fighting for all three of them. The beautiful thoughts of Eve’s when nightmares come, but so are the last memories of her family. This is why she does this. Will it be a victory, or a sadness. Another story that will leave an impression on you. Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.
-This fourth book in the “Eva” series has it’s beginning in the previous book, when Eva gets a message through the Queen of Spades web site that a woman is desperate for her help. The woman’s daughter was vacationing in Los Cabos, Mexico and has gone missing. The authorities seem to be dragging their feet, and the US embassy only says to wait and see if she turns up. The young girl had gone with a group of friends who said that the missing girl went out the night before their return flight and never showed up the next morning. -In the previous book, Eva had dispensed a threat to her own life and that of her niece, Gia, in Italy, and now embarked on this mission to locate this young girl. A flight was arranged by her “right hand man”, Francesca, who also arranged for the rental of a villa away from the town. The villa was stocked with basic necessities, like food and weapons and had the security of a 20 foot tall wall surrounding the premises with a locked gate. -We jump back and forth between what Eva is doing and enter the world of Bernardo Santigo who was trying to take over the Mexican cartels. He’s meeting with a corrupt CIA official who’s made a deal with Santigo to secretly back him and remove his competition for the top spot but Santigo, who would continue his illicit operations, would now be under the control of the US government’s corrupt CIA agent. Payment to the agent was a requisite, with money that was soon to be in Santiago’s hands from drug sales and sex trafficking. -Santigo had made a business of kidnapping vacationing young girls and would slowly destroy their will so that he could make porn tapes of them. We get a glimpse of the young girl that Eva has been sent to locate as she’s drugged and beaten in order to make her subservient. Santigo, though, is not content to just make tapes. He himself, a fifty year old aging man, must sample each girl and he keeps raping the ones that interest him. If they try to rebel he either beats them further or leaves them locked up for days while sometimes having them brutally killed. -The townspeople fear for their lives and are reluctant to help. They know that there are many on the payroll of Santiago’s cartel and to speak against them means death. But Eva is undeterred and starts her investigation with the mother of the young girl, Mrs. Peters, who has flown to Los Cabos to search, unsuccessfully for her daughter, Hayden. Eva reaches out to Hayden’s friends and starts to get more information on the whereabouts of Hayden during her stay in the town and Eva starts to make headway in her investigation. -Eva learns quickly that being alone against a gang leader while in his territory stacks the odds against her. While walking on the beach after speaking to some people at a club, she is silently attacked from behind by three thugs. They quickly overpower her but she manages to injure two of them while men from the area run to her aid. She must now be extra cautious and aware, but the thought of the young Peters girl being subjected to the horrors of repeated rapes and possible death spurs her on. -Another girl turns up missing and we discover that Santigo has multiple women who he samples and keeps locked up to further his porn business. It becomes a race against time as Santigo tries to buy off the CIA agent, who believes there is only one girl captive, and demands that Santigo gets rid of that girl. Talk amongst the various cartel members speak of how Santigo now only thinks of satisfying his fetish and is not worthy of leading the various cartels, but this additional threat to his power now makes him more dangerous. -Here again, the author captivates us with the danger that confronts her main character and the fearlessness with which she acts. Eva does have soft spots and they reveal themselves occasionally but Eva’s hardness is necessary for her survival. The dialogue, as usual, is very good, and though the books are relatively short, they’re filled with action and are very satisfying.
Eva, our international woman of assistance and assassination, goes to Mexico to help a mother find her missing daughter while still dealing with the death of one of her own girls. As the story progresses memories from the past threaten to pull her under, the web is more tangled than first believed, and an ace up her own sleeve could help her prevail. Kristi Belcamino’s The Ace of Clubs delves into the seedy underbelly of Mexican Cartels and continues to expand Eva’s reputation both good and bad. Ms. Belcamino has a gift for allowing her characters to fight both emotional and physical battles. I have yet to be disappointed by any of her books and will have to wait patiently (maybe) for her next one. Reader discretion advised due to dark subject matter and/or possible triggers.
I received a free copy of the book from the author. I had the opportunity to review or not.
The Queen of Thrillers Gives us Another Ace of a Story
Eva is developing into quite a person and Kristi takes on yet another scourge. Kristi leads the reader through another suspenseful and emotional journey. In this latest book in the Queen of Spades saga Eva continues to work through her grief of the loss of her family. One way to do this is to eliminate the type of people who cause such grief. This time she takes on the forced sex trade. One of the most vicious and cruel acts that humans inflict upon another member of our own species. I really enjoy reading how Kristi brings together current issues and great situations while also allowing us to become a part of stories. The reader also feels a sense of satisfaction when the book ends and Eva has been able to save another life. I highly recommend this book and look forward to another Eva story.
Following straight on from The Suicide King, Eva heads to Cabo to help find a missing American girl after receiving a mother's desperate plea. Unfortunately missing girls aren't a rare occurrence here, and Eva has her work cut out for her trying to find this particular girl. The city is full of people with something to hide, and most are not willing to tell Eva the truth about what they know.
It is so great to see Eva's vulnerable side throughout these books, and not just her tough side. She doesn't let her personal demons slow her down though, she just puts those thoughts on hold while she helps others.
This series just keeps getting better and better! Kristi writes these awesome female lead characters, but they aren't perfect, which just makes them that much more likeable. Loved this book and can't wait for the next one!
I love Kristi Belcamino's stories - some more than others. Gia is my absolute favorite and Gabriella is a close second. I'm getting to know Eva and she is definitely a bad ass woman. In Ace of Clubs she travels from Italy to Cabo San Lucas to find a missing girl. I have actually lived there in the mid to late 80s and found it very interesting since I could just see everything in my mind. If course she gets in trouble, has friends in both high and low places. We catch up on her private life and it intermingled with some of her other books which I enjoy a lot. I am a member of the Advance Readers ie: ARC team and love doing this. Once you start reading Mrs. Belcamino's books I believe you will be as hooked as I am.
Without giving anything away and absolutely no spoilers, here's what you need to know. Thrills, intrigue, corruption, lies and just plain great writing captivate you from the first word to the last. Belcamino does an amazing job keeping action new, fresh and fast-paced, in this latest installment staring the kickass heroine, Eva. If you haven't read the other books in this series, it's okay, you can still pick up this story easily, but you will certainly want to go back to read the others. There are recurring characters that you will certainly want to get to know, so, stop here, one-click this book and don't look back! You won't be sorry. I received an ARC of this book and this is my honest review.
Another great story in the Queen of Spades series; Kristi has done it again! This one is another suspenseful, action-packed journey for Eva that will keep you engaged from the beginning and keep you flipping pages until you are done. This story goes beyond a mission for Eva as she has to also deal with the bittersweet memories from her past while searching for a missing girl. She has to probe into the darker side of town as secrets, lies, shady deals, corruption, trafficking, and the cartel throws dangerous roadblocks in her way. With a few twists and surprises thrown in, Eva’s vulnerabilities are exposed as she risks it all to find and bring the missing girl home. There is lots of suspense, danger, high emotions and action to enjoy in this thrilling addition.
*I received an arc from the author and I am voluntarily providing my honest review.
So far author is doing a good job keeping me interested
So this is book four of the series. The author has continued to do a decent job keeping me interested in wanting to find out what happens next. Kudos for that, by the way!
There is still some of the same issues with missing words, a couple misspelled words (such as Ho instead of He) but in this one, at least the sentences/paragraphs make more sense.
The different plots/storyline in each book keeps it interesting. Sometimes when you read a series, the author have a lot of the same things going on but this author has managed to keep it different.
Overall, another good read even with some of my little notes on what I found wrong. I'm looking forward to the next one.
A great read. I think it’s the best in the series so far. The typical part is there. A strong kickass female main character with plenty of action. A straight forward plot that never lets you down. It’s worth reading for just that. But the author gives you much more. Kristi’s books are character driven. We already knew what drives Eva. With this book we learn much more about Eva. Her character is developed wonderfully. We feel something that she has gone through and continues to live with. We feel why she is who she is and how, sometimes, it’s hard to continue. Kristi continues to get better with every book. Highly recommended.
Confession: after completing this book I went back and reread the first three books and the prologue book. Eva is an outstanding character, and this book is another great story of her talents. This is the first story where she received very little outside help to achieve her objective. She continues to use her position as a Mafia Don to stop sex trafficking and punish those responsible. The scene has shifted to Baja California, but the action and suspense remain constant. I look forward to each new entry in this series, and I have never been disappointed.
Young women are disappearing from a resort town. The police are no help. Who does a distraught mother turn to? Who else but the Queen of Spades. Tackling the case with the intensity only a mother has, Eva again proves that bad guys should not underestimate what a motivated Italian e-mob gal can accomplish. In Ace of Clubs Kristi Belcamino delivers the reader a fast-paced unputdownable thriller filled with multi-dimensional characters. With each story in this series she pearls back another layer of emotion and dept in Eva. Definitely a book you don't want to miss.
Yet another fab read from Kristi Belcamino. Eve is contacted to find a kidnapped girl & as usual nothing goes as planned. If you like books about namby pamby females then this defiantly ain't the book for you, Eve is a strong kick ass woman with a sad past that leads her to take her revenge & help people along the way. This instalment has you gripped from page one right through till the end & leaves you wanting more. Works as a stand alone but you will want to read the rest of the series. Highly recommend, fantastic writing plenty of depth & amazing characters.
Immediately taking off from Suicide King Eva is off to Cabo. Kidnapped girls need rescuing and Eva doesn’t know who to trust. This has a small tie in to Stone Cold, Gia’s latest book. It’s always a fabulous and exciting adventure reading about Eva, and unfortunately very close to reality. Sex trafficking is sick and twisted, definitely learned a lot from these books. I received an early copy but my review is given voluntarily.
Wow. Found myself totally engaged and read fast to keep up. Eva is one bad ass bitch and nobody is going to stop her. When a daughter goes missing the mother finds the Queen of Spades website. The mother character was not developed and wasn’t needed to make this an action packed read. We see the daughters side as well and it’s a little darker than expected but shows the growth of this exciting author.
Kristi Belacamino has done it again! Book 4 of Eva adventures picked up where book 3 left off. Girls are disappearing in Mexico and Eva knows that the Cartels are responsible! She is recruited to help find missing Hayden who disappeared and hasn't been seen in over 2 weeks, Eva has a plan, with her motherly instincts kicking in , and many twists and turns, Eva vows to get this girl home safely to her mother! Be prepared to sit and read this in one without putting it down.
My only criticism of The Ace of Clubs was that it was so exciting, so action packed, so well written, that I finished it way too soon. I enjoyed every minute of the book, but when it was over, I wanted more. Every book by Kristi Belcamino is an adventure, and each one, although the character may be the same, is a different experience, and always a great one. All I can say is read them ALL!!!! And more than once.
I started this book just before bed last night and when I woke up early this morning the first thing I did was make a pot of tea and read until I finished. Fast paced and exciting this book is a great addition to the Queen of Spades series! Highly recommend the series if you like a strong female lead who takes a licking and keeps on ticking and targeting the evil in the world.
Another well written, gritty, fast paced Eva adventure! Baja Mexico is the latest playground for her action packed scenario. Sex trafficking is the underlying basis of this novel. And you know sex trafficking and Eva do not mix well at all! Action, current topic, and relevant characters combine for a fun read!
I really love this series it is absolutely brilliant. It is a blend of thrills and drama and heartbreaking pathos I empathise with Eva and her life past and present. She has turned her personal tragedy into a lifelong crusade helping others who suffer as she does. She is to my mind an amazing woman a true warrior and hero.
I read this book in a day. I couldn't put it down. Non-stop action and excitement. One of the author's best. The characters seemed to come alive. Sometimes it was a little too real and I could feel the fear and pain of the young women who were victimized. No sympathy, though, for the villains!
Sometimes I think that no one proofs these stories. Contradictions everywhere. Women characters who should be strong role models but instead are sexual alcoholics who constantly forget their training and allow their adversary to get the drop on them. This is a turn off as the women appear in reality to be weak and not better.
Eva goes to Mexico to help a mother find her missing daughter. A cartel head is taking young girls and using them for sex and trafficking. Eva, The Queen of Spades, is out to find justice for these girls. This is another page turning thriller that will not disappoint.
OMG, this is the best book yet about Eva, the Queen of Spades. Once started you can’t put down. The twists and turns, the ups and downs are outstanding. Way to go Kristi. Can’t wait for the next one
Eva Santella is looking into a case of an American girl gone missing in Mexico. She will use her skills to get to the bottom of this no matter what it takes. An excellent read with lots of suspense and action. Loved it!
A dynamic story. Eva works her mission even though she is wanted in the United State and the Mafiaso has put a target on her back. All the wonderful characters in Kristi Belcamino are well developed. I recommend the Queen of Spades series.
This is a very gripping story of a mother’s love for her missing daughter. Eva is a very fascinating character. I really like her. This is a fast paced book full of action. A great addition to the series. I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving this review
The Queen of Spades is a great character. The author brings her to full three-dimensional life. This story moves along quickly, and has just enough red herrings to keep you guessing. Kristi Belcamino, the author, is getting better and better. Well done, Kristi!
