Deegan Volkov is a werewolf—a direct descendant of the first dark soul who’d committed the vile crime for which his ancestor and the other four had been cursed. It was his fate to suffer.
The monster that dwelt inside Deegan had always taken far more than it ever gave. So, when he was faced with yet another impossible choice, Deegan had known no other way. No other path had been open to him. But this last agonizing loss had been too much for his heart to bear, and he’d howled his pain and despair to an uncaring moon never expecting a miracle—or her.
How could Eva Azoulf exist? She was a female werewolf in a world where all the cursed were men and the very last of a bloodline reported to have died out nearly a century ago. She was an impossibility, one that Deegan’s wolf was set on claiming for himself. But the man in Deegan craved more than just her body. To heal his torn and tattered soul, he yearned to find a way to win her heart.

2020 Georgia Independent Author of the Year Award (Romance Catagory for The Love of Gods)
"From cover to cover, Smith delivers insanely well-drawn characters and enough moments of levity to keep this paranormal romance moving along at a brisk pace. Never does Smith's work lack. As the author bounces from one subplot to the next and back, she keeps readers on their toes and deeply involved with each of the main characters and their tragic lives."
"The entire cast of characters created by Smith is deserving of readers' adoration for that matter. Humor is a big part of Smith's writing and adds to the depth of her characters."

Excellent Writing The Fate of Wolves by Tarrant Smith
This is in some ways a conventional paranormal romance novel involving werewolves and other creatures. I have not read the “Twilight” books, but suspect that fans of those novels would find the contours of this story familiar. It does take place in the present day and not in 17the century Transylvania, which may be a bit unusual. The main character is Eva Azoulf, the rarest of rare paranormals, a female werewolf. She becomes bonded with Deegan Volkov, soon after he has had to make a tortured decision that almost has destroyed his soul, for the good of his pack. It is his responsibility as the alpha. But soon, secrets from Eva’s past and conflicts with Deegan’s nephew Seif will force everyone in the pack to make life-altering choices. Is there a possibility that an ancient curse can be lifted? Or will blood-lust and the drive to dominance mean an internecine fight to the death?
What I Liked: I was pleasantly surprised to find the editing of the novel to be excellent. I saw a couple of run-on sentences, but that was all. Well done! The quality of the writing is also superb. Tarrant Smith has a gift for well-crafted sentences and creating a sense of place that is totally immersive and believable. For example, the characters did seem to have a wolf-like side to their nature. Scents were important to the story and are often mentioned. The story arc has rising tension, if not a lot unexpected turns, yet there were some surprises as the conclusion drew near. The characters of Eva and Deegan showed real growth. A couple of lines that I liked: “The only cure for that kind of extreme evil is love. As hokey as that may sound, Eva, it’s the truth. Love has always been the ultimate act for redeeming a soul.”
What I Did Not Like: Readers need to be aware that this is a “steamy” novel. Perhaps that is understood to be part of the genre. I am not sure. But readers who dislike explicit sex and obscenities will be uncomfortable with this book. I suppose the idea the werewolves could have a good side had never occurred to me before, and that still seems to me to be an oxymoron. So, the book lost me at the point where it revealed that these cursed wolf-men could not only have sparks of good mixed in with evil, but that they are mostly good, except for a little evil on occasion. I could go with the idea for awhile, then my logical nature would rebel. It is not that I did not like the idea of finding good in unlikely places, but it just seemed so unlikely to find good in these places.
Conclusions: There are some events that are unconventional to the genre, which I will not mention to avoid spoilers, but despite this I think fans of the genre will enjoy this novel very much. I believe it is worthy of four stars.
Think the beginning of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers meets a grown-up Twilight — if you take out the singing and the teenage love triangle. Yes, this is paranormal romance, and it perfectly combines mystery, romance, and magic for this werewolf tale like none you’ve read before. The dialogue is smart, the characters are well-developed, and something about the pack dynamics reminds me of the start of the aforementioned musical when you have one strong woman surrounded by a crowd of wild men. Expect to be enchanted yourself and to fall in love with this supernatural beach selection.
To be fair, the Legends of the Pale series start with The Love of Gods, and Smith just released the third in the series, The Dreams of Demons. However, they can be read in any order you like.
Okay, so, being from Newfoundland, I'm partial to any book that mentions our rugged, rocky island but believe me when I say that you will not be disappointed in this book, this series, or this author. Tarrant Smith is an amazing storyteller who will grip you from the first page and hold you fast with a world like none you have yet seen in the literary universe. Well-written and engaging, this is the kind of story I am glad to hold in my library because it is one that I will be reading again...and again. Five stars are well deserved here.
I've been reading Books by Tarrant Smith for the past year. I enjoy her plot development, and the way she surprises me with her chracter's unexpected twists. She really hits her stride with The Fate of Wolves, the fifth of her books I have read. If you're going to read stories about paranormal characters, you want them to be strange, but still have distinct personalities and relatable emotions. That's a tough proposition for any author. Smith carries it off.
This book was not only detailed enough to visualize the story as a mental movie imagery, but the manner in which Tarrant Smith sculpted the characters personalities, thoughts, feelings made them truly stand out in their own way and relatable. I look forward to seeing more work from this author!

The Fate of Wolves by Tarrant Smith is an incredible adventure to find yourself submersed in. This captivating story tells of a female curse-born werewolf who starts out alone and hiding, cautious about venturing out with the others like her and content living in her own private world. Her coming together with a pack of male werewolves who were maintaining a careful relationship between their human forms and wolf forms had her questioning all that her father and grandparents had ever taught her. I loved watching Eva, the lone werewolf, grow accustomed to living her life with the Volkov pack. I also enjoyed watching the Volkov pack quickly grow fond of Eva. I found this book to be very captivating. I enjoyed watching as Eva grew to learn more about the history of both sides of who she is, as well as watching Eva and Deegan's battle between the choices they felt they had as humans, and the duties and obligations of being cursed as werewolves. This story kept me on my toes, hoping for the safety of both Deegan and Eva and rooting for their love to last. Their love for eachother was so inspiring!
In my opinion, this book is for mature audiences only. I recommend this book to any ADULT who loves a fierce love story laced with wolves. Excellent story, and amazing writing style! 5 stars from me!
