Life is hard enough for Tansy with her depressed mom away indefinitely and her dad making a mess of things at home. But then Dad sends her down the hall to a wrinkly old babysitter named Miss Stella, who Tansy hates on sight. Miss Stella has a unique perspective on life, to say the least, but with the help of her best friend Parveen, Tansy gradually learns to manage all the changes in her life and make unexpected new friends in the process.
After writing for adults for more than 20 years, I turned to writing for younger readers in 2007. My first children's book, MEETING MISS 405 was published by Orca Book Publishers in Fall, 2008, and subsequently won top place in the BC Choclate Lily Children's Choice Award.
My subsequent seven books for readers aged six to 14 have been nominated for awards and included on prestigious lists of recommended reading.
My how-to book '101 - and more - Writing Exercises to Get You Started & Keep You Going' is used by writing teachers, students, and writers.
My first nonfiction book SHELTER; HOMELESSNESS IN OUR COMMUNITY will be published by Orca Book Publishers on Oct 12, 2021.
This book was really easy but I liked the plot and concept. Tansy has to deal with a new adult figure in her life and she just wants things to go back to normal with her mom, but normal is never exciting! I learned about a lot of stuff like pea butter and calligraphy! GO READ THIS BOOK! Well, maybe just for fun, not a book report or something!
Tansy finds out that her mom has depression in Meeting Miss 405 by Lois Peterson. “Dad says her depression makes Mom cry all the time. It is an invisible disease that feels even worse than when my hamster died and I thought I would miss him forever. Depression is more than being sad, Dad says. And it is not catching and is not my fault…But sometimes I wish she would just get over it. Then I feel bad.”
my reading of meeting miss 405 coincided nicely with lois peterson winning a chocolate lily award for the book (congrats!). it's an extrememly well deserved choice: the novel is extremely well written, uses a wonderful amount of detail (all very quirky and original), and just as a bonus covers relevent family issues (mom is hospitalised for depression). read it! and buy it for a kid in your life.
