In 2011, Håkonshallen, the great hall of the medieval royal castle in Bergen, celebrated its 750th anniversary. To mark the event, a conference was held, bringing together historians, art historians and archaeologists to discuss topics concerning both the hall itself and the wider medieval world of which it was a part. This richly illustrated volume contains nine papers that were presented at the conference, discussing diverse topics related to the hall and its different aspects: The building itself, the people who used it, its function as center of the kingdom, the city and the castle, and its symbolic value, as a sign of royal power in medieval times and as relic of the medieval past today.
