A social history of Germany, 1648-1914

Rate this book
The book was originally published in 1977 by Methuen & co. Ltd., London. A substantial new introduction by the author reviews changes in scholarship on Germany. When it first appeared, this book was the first to integrate the autobiographical records of contemporaries in assessing the work of modern German social historians. Two chronological sections deal with the period from the end of the Thirty Years War until the destruction of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806, and 1806-1914, covering the ruling social groups and classes, princes and their courts, the churches, nobility, the military, and the bureaucracy, and the objects of their social control (the middle ranks of society, peasants, and women).
