Some parents know that the early years are important in building a strong foundation for life-long learning. As parents, some of them understand their child most intimately and therefore play an important part in providing a home environment that will support the learning and development of their child. Their role in the holistic development of their child continues when s/he attends pre-school. It is therefore helpful for them to know the principles which guide the learning experiences that are planned for their child by their pre-school and their teachers.
In order for parents to work with the pre-school and their child’s teachers, MOE (Singapore) has published Nurturing Early Learners – A Curriculum Framework for Kindergartens in Singapore: A Guide for Parents. The Guide for Parents is based on “Nurturing Early Learners – A Curriculum Framework for Kindergartens (Revised 2012)” which is also developed by the Ministry of Education. This guide highlights what the kindergarten curriculum framework says about how children learn and develop and what children should be able to do at the end of their kindergarten education.
It is hoped this guide will be a useful reference as parents partner with their child’s pre-school and teachers to nurture their child’s love for learning, help them develop positive attitudes towards learning and instil greater confidence as they move from the home to a pre-school setting.
