The Girl He Loves

Rate this book
Some secrets are meant to be discovered.

Mischa Lombardi is odd. Pragmatic. Perfectionist. Neurotic. Diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder at the age of eleven, she can’t remember being any other way.

Thankfully, with the assistance of medication and therapy, her life is well under control. Some might even say it’s perfect: a beautiful husband, her sons Trevor and Tristan, a fabulous condo, work she enjoys and great friends.

Yet she’s still extremely fragile. It’s the reason she always guards her emotions very carefully. And unfortunately, nothing can help her when, by chance, she discovers her husband’s secret — Ava, a beautiful young woman. She was so sure she knew her husband, but now she desperately needs to uncover the truth.

It’s no surprise when she becomes obsessed with Ava, with every trivial detail of her life; her friends, her beautiful mother, and most of all, her gentle and sweet father. Driven not only by curiosity and obsession, but also by jealousy and lust, she heads down a turbulent path as she sets out to uncover everything about her husband’s secret life and all the mysterious people in it.

Author's note: Contains some sexual content and coarse language - for adult audiences 18+. The Girl He Loves is Book One of the Orchard Heights Series but can be read as a standalone. Genre: Psychological Romance Suspense

description I actually thought I had read a book by this author before, but I guess I haven't. In any case, I enjoyed this book. It lacked a little depth considering some of the heavy topics the author tossed into the book. And I thought Brian got off a little too easy considering the magnitude of the secrets he had been keeping for YEARS. However, Mischa herself wasn't a saint, so I guess they deserved each other. 😂

The reviews on this one are all over the place, and as readers, we all have different opinions about what is dark, cheating, etc. If you’re familiar with my reviews, you know I have a pretty large tolerance with content, so keeping that in mind…. I hope this helps.

Going in, it was hard for me to get a read on what the “feel” of The Girl He Loves would be, or what the hell it was about. In a nutshell, this is a mystery-ish family drama surrounding Ava, and what her relationship is with Brian. The blurb is a bit misleading; it’s not gritty or dark; there’s nothing nefarious going on; Mischa isn’t a psycho. Honestly, I found it a bit anticlimactic; there’s no real “fall out” from the secret, or any M’s actions.

It started out good, and I was instantly interested. I liked Mischa; she’s crazy, but in a cute obsessive stalker kind a way. Her OTT reaction to finding Ava’s photo was entertaining, but then we figure out the “mystery” around 28%, and her behavior started to wear on me. We’re pretty much stuck in a “Mischa obsessive stalking” cycle from then until about 85% in, and then everything is just worked out. There’s no real drama, M has stewed over the “secret” and if she can forgive for CHAPTERS, and then poof, she’s totally cool with everything. Then we have her “mistakes” and Brian’s just super cool with it too.

Bottom line- It was ok; I enjoyed it, but I felt like it was a big build up to nothing, and I was left a bit disappointed.

Gritty, angsty...all of the things I love about a Roya Carmen book. Real life situations with fallible characters who work their way into your heart. My heart was torn in so many directions with Mischa, Brian, Joel and Renee. I was drawn into their drama and what Mischa would do next. It didn't matter that she was OCD. I kept thinking oh, I know almost anybody would do that. Or that. Or that. I was kept on the edge of my seat as the secret unfolded more and then a little more. This book is not so much steamy as intriguing and titillating with those marital scandals that you sometimes catch a whisper about. This time we are thrown right into the middle and experience everything front and center. Just. The. Way. I. Like. It. I know right now I am ADDICTED to this new series.

I was fascinated with Mischa's story. A woman who suffers from OCD, which can lead to serious consequences depending on the situation. In her particular dilemma it centered around her husband and the woman in the picture. She couldn't fathom that her husband would be cheating on her but then she became obsessed with this girl herself.

To have to struggle in life with this kind of "disease" is not fun and I'm sure the person who suffers from it also struggles with it. Although Mischa was see a therapist for her condition, she was doing so well until she wasn't.

This story was one of real life sacrifices, struggles and so many roller coasters that you were unaware of what to expect next.

Roya Carmen has really gone out and made me fall for these characters that were unbelievably realistic.

I skimmed literally 80% of this book. The heroines internal musings are the entire gist of the book. Her ruminations went on, and on, AND ON. I only stuck it out to get o the resolution. It wasn't worth it. 0.5*don't waste your time*stars

I'm ALWAYS anxious when I start a book by Roya Carmen. When I expect the most angst, she delivers. With The Girl He Loves, the anxiety came on so many levels. What would Micha Lombardi learn when she discovers a photo of a young woman hidden in her house? Is she ready for the truth?

Let me tell you, Micha is a woman with a very active mind and a unique approach to life. Reading this book was an experience, as I expected, one that created intrigue and suspense, and it was too far into the story before I realized how off the rails Micha's mind and heart could go. She throws caution to the wind and is unlike any other character I've read.

I can't count how many times my jaw dropped at her approach to unearthing the truth. As the story progresses, and Micha allows herself to be so ensconced on the lives of Ava and her family, it's not long before it's out of control and she is the main reason her life seems to go sideways.

To me, it appears that Roya Carmen created a new genre: "Psychological Romance Suspense", and it is so fitting to her writing and the story. At times it was incredibly hard to be in Micha's head, yet I loved it. The scary thing is that the story appears to be ripped from the headlines. Obsession is easy to understand, but her actions and straight-up crazy. She creates her own chaos and the damage is almost too much (and again, I loved it).!

I'm so excited to be in on book one of this series and look forward to more of this from Roya Carmen. I'd recommend you read this when you have time to consume the story in one fell swoop!!

This is a book with a female lead character unlike any I've read before. Mischa Lombardi has some deep rooted issues that we see in stark focus when she stumbles across a secret. The main characters of Mischa Brian Renee and Joel make addictive reading and all very flawed. I couldn't stop reading because I needed to see what she would do next. At times I cringed and seriously questioned her actions but as you read you come to understand her more.

This was an intriguing steamy books that will appeal to the gossip lovers like me who love drama full of secrets and lies.

I loved reading The Girl He Loves by Roya Carmen because her main character is not your typical lead female. Mischa Lombardi with her OCD and strange idiosyncrasies shape this story into a unique tale.

The Girl He Loves has you struggling right along with Mischa and at the same time you're rooting for her and the wonderful life she has built with her husband Brian.

The saying "A picture is worth a thousand words" holds true in this story. Mischa's world starts to spiral and I was eager to see where Roya was going to lead me next. Just like Mischa needed answers, so did I. The rollercoaster ride was just beginning!

Another great aspect of this book was Mischa's friends and their weekly get togethers. What girl couldn't use some friendship and fashion in their lives.

This is Mischa's journey from childhood to motherhood and the challenges she faced being diagnosed with OCD. With therapy and medications she found the balance in her life so she could be a good wife and mother....

Until......

She found a picture of a beautiful young woman, Ava. A picture that belonged to her husband. Now she seeks for the truth that could not only destroy her family but another.

adjective: OCD

having a tendency towards excessive orderliness, perfectionism, and great attention to detail.

Another first time author for me and I'm now intrigued to check out her other works because of this one. It was a different read for me, and I loved that about it. The character depth was fantastic. I was over Mischa's shoulder the whole way….. wonderfully written. Can't wait to see what I'll check out next!

An intriguing read and beautiful love story!

I found Mischa Lombardi’s story fascinating. I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but I did think Mischa went a little too easy on Brian. Regardless, this is a must read if you enjoy psychological suspense romance. Roya Carmen has a new fan and reader. I look forward to reading her other books! Loved it!

I Didn't even have a Shelf for this Book!

Boy oh boy did Roya Carmen deliver with this psychological romance, however I don't know if it is even considered a romance. Whatever it was, had me finishing it in one day. I couldn't wait to see how it ended.

"I look so normal on the outside. But inside, it's a total utter effed-up circus."

We are introduced to Mischa and Brian, the perfect little family unit on the outside, but on the inside Mischa has to give it her all to project normal. She keeps her rituals and ticks as under control as she can for herself, her husband and her kids. That control is pretty hard to keep for Mischa once she finds that her loving, patient husband has been keeping something from her. This secret sends Mischa into a life she's dealt with before and like a moving train, is impossible for her to stop.

"Unfortunately, there's a big difference between what one knows is the right thing to do, and what one actually does-especially when fear and obsession are involved."

The journey into Mischa's mind was interesting to say the least. I completely got where she was coming from with the obsession over this secret and needing to find out everything about it. Mischa is a strong, smart woman and sometimes makes bad choices due to her disease. It was compelling to see how she channeled the obsession and then fret over the choices she had to make. The secret was eating her alive, yet she ended up making a new life around it for a while.

The book is well written and detailed to a tee, which I appreciated. Roya Carmen drew us in instantly with her characters and kept that interest until the last page. This is the first book I have read from her and will definitely be looking for the next one in this series.

This was an extremely interesting and somewhat enlightening book for me because of the subject matter of a woman suffering from OCD. The book was written very well and it held my attention all the way through. It is a bit of a slow burn at first, but it definitely gathered pace in the second half of the book; with lots of secrets, twist and turns popping up to make you gasp with surprise.

I thought Mischa was an interesting character to read because I have never read about someone before with this level of OCD and I found her fascinating if not somewhat frustrating at times. Some of the things she did were quite shocking and not thought about at all which left me thinking a few times "OMG I would never do that" On the other hand there were occasions when I felt really sorry for Mischa whose brain was on overdrive many a time, after all this is an illness she has.

Brian her husband was the complete opposite. Steady, controlled, laid back; in fact sometimes too accommodating for me considering what his wife got up to and what she reveals to him. When a secret comes to light Mischa's life becomes even more complicated and she finds herself on a mission to dig out as much information as she can; not really caring how she goes about it.

All in all, this is a good read, with some good secondary characters who added immensely to the story.

The Girl He Loves is a unique story showcasing Mischa's life, a married woman with two kids, and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. At this point in her life, she has everything in control. She has a handle on the OCD, and life is good. Well, until it isn't.

The day she finds a photo of a beautiful young woman hidden behind her wedding picture is the day it all starts to unravel.

The book illustrates how even happily married couples can hit some rough patches. What truly matters is how you weather that storm — together or apart.

The Girl He Loves was a touching story that showed what true love really is. How love is blind. How, when you really love someone, you accept them for who they are, not who you want them to be.

So I’ve never read from this author before! But oh my goodness what a writer she is. This story is angsty, gritty and at times uneasy as Mischa’s obsession takes over.
After finding a hidden photograph of a beautiful young girl Mischa who suffers with OCD becomes convinced her husband is having an affair.
She becomes obsessed with the girl in the photograph.
The story is different to anything I’ve read before and was more suspense rather than romance.
The characters really felt like real people became they weren’t perfect each flawed in their own way.
If your looking for something a bit different then this book is for you.

I really enjoyed reading The Girl He Loves by Roya Carmen . A book that centers around Mischa, a wife, a mother, and a friend who suffers from OCD and others. She finds hidden photo- one of a young girl- which leads her into a path of needing to know ... know EVERYTHING!

A story full of secrets to be revealed. Of friends and outings. Of love, lust , broken hearts, healed relationships, as well as failed ones.

Wonderfully written with relatable characters. Will be looking out for other books in the series.

𝕋𝕒𝕟𝕥𝕒𝕝𝕚𝕫𝕚𝕟𝕘𝕝𝕪 𝕊𝕖𝕔𝕣𝕖𝕥𝕚𝕧𝕖... 𝔸 𝕥𝕙𝕣𝕚𝕝𝕝𝕚𝕟𝕘 𝕣𝕚𝕕𝕖 𝕒𝕙𝕖𝕒𝕕😍

At first I was so apprehensive when I started reading this one. I didn't know where the author was going to take me or if I was even prepared for what awaited me.

Mischa has a husband she loves and an amazing family. She's always been with Brian and now after almost two decades they are all the more stronger and have two amazing sons together.

But what happens when you come across a simple picture and that picture not only shocks you but also shatters your belief of the perfect life you thought you had.

This is what happens with Mischa as she stumbles upon a secret that leads her on a dangerous emotional journey that can not only wreck her life but also the people around her.

Especially when Mischa has a different personality and is intense and doesn't exactly handle troublesome situations in a normal way. But makes her problems her obsession as she goes on to finding answers.

As Mischa goes on tumbling further in the rabbit hole of obsession she not only finds out more secrets but also starts dancing on the fine line between temptation and friendship when one of her obsessions start becoming into someone special and she begins to want more.

I was so on edge about Joel and Mischa. As Joel is a genuinely good man and when he starts feeling things for Mischa, I was so nervous not knowing how this all would end.

Even though I'd read the blurb yet I was so unprepared and surprisingly pleasantly shocked for sure.
Let me tell you this one will smack you and at the same time keep you guessing, on your toes. Sometimes scared and nervous, other times as excited and with jittery butterflies with the feeling of what it feels when you are doing something that you know is supposedly wrong yet can't stop yourself.

AHH. This was so different from what I've been reading recently and certainly a refreshing change for sure.
I loved how this story grabbed me and didn't let me go right till that ending. I'm certainly excited to read more from this author for sure. Loved this one. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Oh my! Mischa was a hot mess most of this book. I loved her though. Even with her issues she was very outgoing. So, the story was kinda scattered. It wasn’t in a super bad way but the story did jump back and forth some. Once we got into the meat of the story I was hooked. I found it predicable but even knowing or guessing correctly didn’t take away from my overall enjoyment of the story. The characters were great, but this was Mischa’s story. Yes she had a husband but this was about her and her acceptance of everything, being chill, being super smart and a little like Nancy Drew.... I really enjoyed it. I can’t see where this series will go but I plan to be along for the ride. If you are wanting a book that will pull you in, make you have questions and a heroine that is way far from perfect then this book is perfect for you. 4 stars #2OCCJD

I absolutely love this author's style of writing and once again she drew me in like a moth to a flame. The heroine in this book suffers with OCD and if her stress levels get too high, she tends to turn a little stalkerish. When she finds a hidden photo, scenarios begin flashing through her head at a mile a minute and her stalker tendencies ramp up to an unprecedented level. It seems there is a method to her madness though.

I did feel that this lacked a little depth when it comes to the characters, however, the story was fascinating and was one of those page-turning reads that I just couldn't put down. Totally entranced in Mischa's story I couldn't read quickly enough and as this sorry tale was brought to its conclusion I was eagerly awaiting the grand finale. I felt sorry for one particular character, and my heart absolutely bled. I would love to know what happened to them

This was a vert different book. I have read any other book with the issues the heroine faced in the book it was interesting and very surprising. I finished it in one sitting, my eyes glued to it. Though I thought Brian didn't deserve to be let off easy no matter what but hey, heart wants what it wants. It was interesting to see how one mistake can lead to so much choas. I would have reacted in a very horrible way. Good book, cant wait for next one!

I like this author a lot. She writes truth. And it’s refreshing to read romances that involve married couples instead of always new love.
The OCD in this book was just a bit much for me. I had to skim some sections because I was bored with the obsession when she could have just asked her husband some questions. But overall I enjoyed the story. I want to read the whole series so I can find out what happens with Weston in book 3 since he’s a character from Ground Rules.
