In The Whitetale Advantage - Understanding Deer Behavior for Hunting Success , the two top deer biologists in the country explain how to become a better hunter by taking basic science of deer biology and behavior and relating it to hunters in a way that will help them achieve greater success and enjoyment from hunting whitetail.
This book contains some good information, with the results of several scientific studies presented in straightforward prose. It's also written with a positive and engaging tone, and is physically attractive, printed on heavy paper with color illustrations throughout. Unfortunately, it was not carefully edited, so reading it can be irritating at times. There are also fictional question and answer sections at the end of several chapters that only repeat information already given. The book could have done without those and been slimmer while still conveying the same information. Plenty of statistics are given in the text regarding things such as deer home range size, tree species used for rubs, and the prevalence of chronic wasting disease (CWD) in various states, though it should be kept in mind that these numbers are all more than 12 years old and some (such as CWD rates or hunter participation statistics) would have changed significantly by now. A final irritation is that although many scientific studies were apparently consulted by the writers, no literature cited section or footnotes are provided.
I wish this were the first book I read about deer hunting. Finally, a book that has quantifiable data on how/why/when/how far deer move rather than old wive's tales or "just trust me" wisdom. There are several significant changes I'll be making to my hunting techniques and strategy based on this book.
There was an above average number of typos throughout, and the author had an annoying habit of calling attention to puns they made.
Unlike other reviewers, I actually enjoyed the redundant and DEFINITELY fake hunter Q&A sections, lol. I thought they clarified key points the author didn't make clear earlier in the chapter.
I've read several of the books in the recommended reading section, and I thought those were solid recs.
This will be my 2nd season hunting and this book taught me what the deer are doing and why. Hoping to land a couple white tails this year with all this information.
