It is a SHAME that this book is out of print. This is a thorough, yet very readable guide to fundamental analysis for investing.
This was written in 2005-06 and some of the information about trading fees is a little outdated. Luckily, trading has gotten much easier and less expensive since then! Most platforms have no fees and trading is free now. Still, the core messages concerning evaluating funds and stocks are as relevant now as they have ever been.
The first half of the book covers mutual funds. These are not as popular now as they have been in the past, but it is still very good to learn how they work, how to pick the best funds, and how to pay the least amount in fees and other expenses. ETF'S were still relatively new when this was writen and they are only minimally discussed. Mutual funds are different from etf's in some important ways in the way they operate, but many of the strategies for choosing mutual funds will translate to etf's well.
The second half of the book covers stocks and gives both good, barebones analytic strategies for choosing investments as well as going much further in depth and really digging into the Financials, management, and other relevant aspects of what makes a company a good prospect. This really is very valuable information. There is also a small, but educational amount of information about selecting bonds in which to invest.
Information about how Morningstar rates stocks, bonds, and funds is sprinkled throughout the book, and explained in further detail in the appendices.
If you are at all interested in investing and want to get past the soundbites about "hot" stock picks, this is a great resource. It would definitely be worth tracking down.
