William Henry "Bill" Matthews III was a geologist.
Matthews began college as a premedical student, but decided against becoming a doctor, became a funeral director. During World War II, he volunteered for the U.S. Navy and was served as a pharmacist. After the war, he returned to college at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, majoring in geology. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees, taught Geology at Lamar University, for 30 years. He retired in 1985.
