Quick read that was done well by one of the masters of the western genre. Jim came into Blackrock as a wanted man with a posse on his tail. As a wanted man he was perfect and as a stranger he could be sent to Morgantown with a message, since no Blackrock man would have made it. The two communities, one in the hills the other in the plains, were at war, but Jim has his own reason for being in the area.

Highly recommended, Haycox is great at the short story and this short novel isn't much more then a novella. Has a nice start and a slight mystery at first in who Jim really is and why he is in the area. On top of the old battle of plains vs hills, you have a few who are using the animosities to their advantage to make money.
