Exodus (The Eerdmans Critical Commentary

Rate this book
In this volume Thomas Dozeman presents a fresh translation of the Hebrew text of Exodus along with a careful interpretation of its central themes, literary structure, and history of composition. He explores two related themes in the formation of the book of the identity of Yahweh, the God of Israel, and the authority of Moses, the leader of the Israelite people.

Dozeman clarifies the multiple literary genres within the text, identifies only two separate authors in the book's composition, and highlights the rich insights that arise from the comparative study of the ancient Near Eastern literary tradition. Also treating the influence of Exodus in the history of Jewish and Christian interpretation, Dozeman's comprehensive commentary will be welcomed by Old Testament scholars.

Expansive with important insights as to how this part of Scripture (Book of EXODUS, Hebrew Bible) is more than what past historico-critical theories of the "Documentary Hypothesis" have attempted to dissect and pass judgment on it.

The diligent scholar - seminary professor of Biblical studies, Dozeman, has published on the Pentateuch (five books of the Torah: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Number, Deuteronomy) before and how it attained its canonical shape from oral and written sources/editions/merged re-telling of the events of Egypt enslavement, liberation, and wilderness encounter to receive Torah commands and worship material and self-identifying marks of Jewish religion, worship, and community observance.

An extensive and detailed exegesis and analysis for those seeking 21st century treatments of this part of Hebrew Bible narratives and law - ritual. Dozeman also recently in the 2010s-2020s for ANCHOR Bible series published commentaries on JOSHUA 1 - 12 and JOSHUA 13-24. Recommended!
