Waylon Geddes, mayor of the small mining town of Sweetwater, is facing his first mayoral opposition in years. As the build-up to the re-election comes closer, two outsiders arrive into town who will forever change the landscape of Jefferson County, West Virginia. Deep within a forested grove a few dozen miles away, three sisters unknowingly conjure up an ancient demon with a stolen bit of spellwork. Their casting goes awry, and the devilish hellcat Ferys is once more unleashed upon the world to spread havoc and destruction in His wake. Waylon is forced to contend with mysterious murders in his otherwise peaceful town, and must endure the hardships both the sheriff’s department and his own duties as mayor. As a respite from the stress, Waylon adopts an adorable and malnourished stray cat on his way home from work. His life, and the lives of those he serves will forever be changed from that moment forward…
So imagine if you took Stephen King and made him write a YA book. It's not kid friendly, but it has some YA fantastical elements. The story itself and how it progresses really put me in mind of King in many ways. Plus you have a religious element that I always tend to love in my books. But the end. You won't see it coming. 😉
Occult horror by the author of DEAD GOD OF HOLDREDGE VALLEY. A tiny mining community in the mountains of West Virginia will never be the same, as a prideful Vietnam vet turned mayor crosses purposes with a prideful new pastor of the only church in town, and controlling the chaos is a demon cat summoned by a mistaken rite resulting in unintended blood sacrifice. The mayor is the first-person unreliable narrator.
When I bought this book without reading the blurb, I thought it was about a witch and her familiar. Boy was I wrong. But it was an interesting book. The author wove the plot in and out in ways that were fantastic without losing sight of the original plot.
This book is written in the first person from the mayor's point of view. His name is Waylon. The story begins when three sisters conjure up a hellcat but since the youngest broke the circle, the incantation went horribly awry. (This was the epilogue). The story itself begins some years later and we find out the hellcat has not disappeared. It is now in Waylon's town. From there, the carnage begins! I will say that the "blood and guts" were not disgustingly descriptive for which I'm thankful.
I believe this book is going to be the first one of a series and I will probably buy book 2 when it comes out.
The plot was great and the characters (for the main part) well written. I gave this book 4 stars.
Cats are little fluffy balls of pure evil that come straight from the depths of Hell. Nah, that’s not true. I love cats. I also love horror that involves cats in any way. R.P. Wood has written a massive story here featuring a cat that would fit in perfectly hanging out with Lovecraft’s elder gods. A slow burn novel that pays off, the setting and characters being completely fleshed out before things start to take a turn. That’s not to say it’s slow, Wood is one of those writers who can write characters going about their day, ordering a bunch of chickens and what have you, in a way that you’re not in a hurry. The writing is authentic, people talk like people, and the emotions are real. Get a bunch of chicken as a tribute to Ferys and read this banger of a novel. K thx.
A demonic cat is summoned inproperly and it wreaks its havoc upon a nearby small town and its mayor and his small. The demon cat, Ferys, corrupts the mind of Mayor Waylon, using him to carry out horrific tasks. The town of Sweetwater begins to crumble, and Ferys will not stop until it is nothing but dust. Will Mayor Waylon be able to fight the mind control and save his town? To summon a Hellcat was a quick read that had an intriguing plot. It was well written and the author did a fantastic job of describing everything, especially in the eerie and creepy parts! I enjoyed the overall story and the ending was one that I didn't see coming. The story was slow at a couple of parts in the book, which is why I didn't give it a full score, but it never lasted too long and would pick up again quickly. Fans of creepy books should definitely read it!
I received a copy of free digital copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving my review.
A Cute Little Cat With a Taste For Blood -- and Chicken
This was a well-written and original book with many twists and turns. At times, the imagery was almost laughable, but this little ginger cat from hell proves that the evilest things can come in small packages. I was surprised by the ending. I hope the author plans a sequel!
