What lies ahead for tomorrow's American? This stimulating collection looks into portents for various aspects of American life over the next two centuries. The authors who have contributed to this anthology – each a recognized authority – deal with major significant aspects of American life, with subjects ranging from international challenges, urban problems, and the effects of economic growth on life-quality, to uses and misuses of science and medicine, and the press’s responsibility for leadership. Together they examine the most significant trends in American life as well as their inherent moral dilemmas. The lectures are arranged in the order in which they were given. Originating in 1976 at the Frank L. Weil Institute for Studies in Religion and the Humanities, the collection of lecture-essays coincided with the centennial of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, with which the Weil Institute is affiliated.
