Take Me Away

Rate this book
Isaac Baxter left Texas at the age of eighteen. It was all he could do. His cowboy father essentially disowned him and abandoned the family. All because he couldn’t take his son’s sexuality.

Now, his father is on the brink of death in the Texas ghost town of Rhode’s Pike. All Isaac really wants in the world is closure. He wants to move forward, to stop feeling the ghosts from his past. So, he decides to journey to West Texas and speak to Thomas Baxter for the first time in eleven years. He’s going to say goodbye.

Wyatt Masters is a failed actor, new journalist and hungry for a story. While in New Mexico, he stumbles into a group of hippie twenty-somethings, traveling by RV to West Texas. They’re preparing for the “beings from Venus” to arrive and take them “up where they belong.” Wyatt thinks he’s fallen into story of a lifetime.

The evil Everett McLean sets up his cult on the outskirts of Isaac’s father’s ranch. So begins the feud between the cult leader and the dying cowboy, in the center of an already dead town.

Soon, chaotic events unfold, threatening the ghost town itself, its rickety and bizarre townsfolk, the twenty-somethings who haven’t a clue what they got themselves into when joining a cult, along with the love brewing between Wyatt and Isaac.

Can Isaac find closure? Can they build any sort of relationship, in the wake of so much terror? Can they save the town of Rhode’s Pike, much like Isaac, is perhaps unwilling to be saved?

***** This is an exciting tale of Wyatt, the failed actor, now journalist, trying to achieve acclaim, plus Isaac, who is going home to face his hateful dying father, and questioning his life. In addition to those thought-filled quests, we have a strange Venus Cult, who has shown up to face the end of the world.
They all intertwine in Isaac's father's farm area in Texas. I liked the suspense of the cult leader's instability, the struggle for Wyatt to get his "great" story, and Isaac's relationships with his sisters, father, and mother.

The characters are unique, the plot has a steady flow, and our men get some wonderful sexy times. The culmination is believable, and the ending and epilogue are worthwhile.

I liked the men and together they are a terrific pair.
ENJOY !

Take Me Away is the story of Wyatt and Isaac who meet in a very unlikely place, a ghost town in Texas. Finding out his father is ill, Isaac goes to Texas to pick up the pieces of his shattered life that was caused by his coming out as a teen. It just so happens that a cult, infiltrated by journalist Wyatt, descends upon the ghost town that Isaac’s father is living in. We get to see the inner workings of a 21st century cult and the people affected by their arrival and mission. Although this story is about Isaac and Wyatt, it also focuses on the other characters like Wyatt’s friends and Isaac’s family and gives them a chance in the spotlight. We get to read and feel the inner thoughts, turmoils, and passions of all of these characters and how their pasts have affected their current lives and how they are attempting to change their futures. It’s a wild story that features so many different pieces that all fit together in the end and makes it great. Each character affects another in some way and they each have their own story to share. I loved being able to learn more about each person and find out what it was that they truly longed for. This is a story of searching and finding the treasure that becomes our true selves. Isaac is forced to leave his home because of the way he is treated for being gay. His father runs away from his family and takes up a new life. Issac finds a man and is with him for years but feels that it is not a good relationship. Finding his father is ill, he heads back to Tx. Not only does he find his dad and is with his sisters he also finds Wyatt, a journalist, and a cult that is being driven to destruction by a maniac of a leader. An excellent story with Issac and Wyatt finding what they are looking for. Relationships mend and an HEA is found by all. My only problem, I guess, I that I didn't really like Issac's behavior. He seemed selfish and thoughtless in his own pursuit of himself and hurt people along the way. That is my opinion of course and not that of others. An excellent read with depth and some danger to add spice to the story. I voluntarily read and reviewed this ARC book.

Thank you for the ARC read, I voluntarily give this book an honest review.  When Isaac turned eighteen he took off for New York, after all what was the point of staying in Texas. After his father walked out on his family every one placed blame on him for being gay. Back home after   years away to deal with his father's illness and family, Isaac meets Wyatt after a cult takes up restraints on Thomas's property.  Wyatt was supposed to be in new Mexico for a foodie report but instead got mixed up with a alien cult. How was this going to turn out when Venus never came? Is Wyatt the one that Isaac has been dreaming of a forever with or will he be another in dreams gone up in flames? Can Wyatt see Isaac as the one to settle down with? This was another great read by Jerry Cole. it touches on so many emotional feeling with family, where blame is not the answer for any child growing up.  Highly recommend!

I'd been reading Jerry Cole's books lately and I'm impressed for the interesting topics on them and this book is not the exception. You have a plot, inside a plot, inside a plot, and in the end the HEA is worthwhile. In this case, a family broken because sexual preferences, the prodigal son going back, the fight against an evil man and his devil cult and a cute and endearing love story of people finding love when they didn't expect it. The book kept you on edge wanting more at the end, because you felt it finishes so quick. Really interesting!

I couldn’t put this book down. A story filled with passion, crazy characters and a beautiful, romantic, blossoming love between Issac and Wyatt.
The sad decaying ghost town is brought to life by the characters and Jerry Cole’s wonderful portrayal of the Texan country.
Issac and Wyatt are two men who capture your imagination and you want to keep reading about their passionate steamy love affair.
I highly recommend this book, the mishmash of characters bring this book alive.

I am a big fan of JC's stories but this one I did not fall in love with.

the book is wonderfully written and the story and characters of Isaac and Wyatt are well developed throughout. My problem with the book, Is that for most of the book, I really did not like either of the two main characters. in true fashion JC ties is up well at the end but Isaac's selfishness and Wyatt deceit where too much for me to rate a 'high five'

This is the story of Isaac and Wyatt. As usual with Jerry's books, this is another deeply emotional story. The chemistry between them is amazing. I loved how the relationship between them developed. The only thing that bothered me a little was the way Isaac went about certain things to discover himself but that is my personal opinion. Great read and definitely recommended.

I received this book as an Arc and I am reviewing it voluntarily.

His book has a very interesting subject. When you read the book it feels as if stumbling from one story to the next. You have a cult, a ghost town, a dysfunctional family and two people finding love in all the chaos. This story is beautifully woven through all this to a HEA ending. Great book. Just to short.

A very different story with a cult and a ghost town as the setting. Isaac and his father have never seen eye to eye, and Isaac is only beginning to understand how alike they are. Wyatt is following the cult, masquerading as a member to get a better story when he and Isaac run into one another. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.

Romance was good, some solid, likable (and dis-likable) characters. The cult subplot was a little contrived. Gave up when Daddy asked his estranged son to drive them off the land.
