Longman Keys to Language Teaching

Mistakes and Correction

Rate this book
This book encourages the teacher to see mistakes as an important part of the learning process.

It looks at the different kinds of mistakes that learners make and offers practical advice on when to correct mistakes and when to leave them, and on how best to correct them in both written and oral work. It includes chapters showing the teacher how to adopt a positive attitude towards mistakes and how to use them as a vital tool in encouraging the students' progress in English.

The author looks at the need to balance accuracy and fluency and gives practical suggestions on how to correct students' mistakes whilst maintaining their enthusiasm for English and encouraging them to speak freely.

The author gives advice on different correction techniques and activities to help teachers try out new techniques in their own classrooms.

Examples of exercises and activities from coursebooks are given, together with student responses, and the author shows how these may be corrected with the maximum benefit to the student and the class as a whole.

I have been involved in teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) since 1969, with an increasing engagement in teacher education in that field. I am fascinated by the interaction between personal development and professional development, and by how individual development is best achieved in social interaction. That is very much the focus of my 2002 book, Continuing Cooperative Development. Mind you, I also love a good story, and I find that my writing has moved more and more away from academic prose towards the sharing of experience and the shared attempt to make sense of it. In my 2011 book, The Reflexive Teacher Educator, I use re-interpretations of the myths of Icarus and Narcissus, as well as snippets from my own mental cowboy movie, to sketch a picture of TESOL teacher education as I have shaped my version of it, and it has shaped my working life. Great read. So short, but concise and impactful. So many how-to reminders of quality teaching in the classroom.

Just re-read today for fun, in one sitting, with a cup of coffee. Not hefty or academic. Just motivating.
