Seven Shades of Memory: Stories of Old Iran

Rate this book
Terence O'Donnell lived in Iran from 1957-71 before returning to America. This collection of short stories shares the theme of cultural collision, either as East meets West, or as members of different cultures within Iran interact. It shows his understanding of the multifaceted nuances of Persian culture and the Westerners who navigate through it.

Stories of Old Iran.

The author, Terence O'Donnell lived in Iran from 1957 to 1971 before returning to his native Oregon where he wrote garden of the Brave in War, Recollections of Iran, a memoir praised by critics as a "gem" and "a literary classic". Terence O'Neill died in Portland Oregon in March, 2001.

"Seven Shades of Memory", us a very apt title for this book. Seven short stories, unrelated, other than place and memory. My favorite "Mrs Chan". Has to do with "le petit bonheur", little moments of complete perfect pleasure. Mrs Chan becomes Bibi Khanum as the story progresses. A van trip with tourists, she sees a spot which delights her, a tea house with a pink bench.
She prefers to remove herself from the tour with the inelegant fellow tourists, telling them to pick her up on the way back. What happens while she is there and it's meaning to her life is beautiful.
