Many of the elements ascribed to traditional Aboriginal beliefs and practices are the result of contact with external peoples--Melanesians and Indonesians, as well as Europeans. This controversial and provocative book is the first detailed and continent-wide study of the impact of outsiders on Australian Aboriginal worldviews. The author separates out a common core of religious belief that 1111 precontact spirituality of Australian Aborigines more concerned with place than with any philosophy of time or origins. A Place for Strangers investigates Aboriginal myth, ritual, cosmology and philosophy, and also examines social organization, subsistence patterns and cultural change. It will be of great interest to readers in anthropology, religious studies, comparative philosophy, Aboriginal studies and Australian history.

معظم دراسات الأنثروبولوجيا الحديثة تشير إلى أن" الأبورجينال" تسميَّة اختص بها" سكاَّن أُستراليا قديماً؛ وترد في الإنجليزية: [Indigenous Australians] أو [Aboriginal].
والتسميَّة في أصدق حالاتها تشير إلى " الشعوب الأصليَّة لأُستراليا "؛ وفي دلالاتٍ متحيَّزة تُطلق على سلالةٍ بشرية ذات جلودٍ داكنة كانت قد سكنت أستراليا قديماً قبل اكتشافها، وفي بعض قواميس اللغة تطلق كلمة " أبورجينال " على الإنسان أو الحيوان أو النبات الذي عاش قديماً في منطقة ما منذ العصور الأولى. ومع ذلك، فالثابت أن تلك الشعوب الأصلية جاءت من أفريقيا وماليزيا والهند وإندونيسيا وبروناي، وتيمور الشرقية، قبل أربعين ألف سنة. لقد كوّن "الإنسان الأصليَّ القديم" حضارة إنسانية فارقة، رغم احتقاره ووصفه بــ" البدائي" والأسود أحياناً؛ إنهم إلى الآن يرفضون التَسميات الاقصائية ويفضلَّون وصف أنفسهم بــ "شعب المياه المالحة، أو شعب المياه العذبة أو أُمة الصحراء".

An interesting book about aboriginal society, beliefs and their relationship with the Torres Strait islanders and various arrivals to Australia (eg Macassars as well as British). A very academic tome, and therefore prone to obfuscatory jargon - ie many points could have been made far more clearly in simple language. The analysis of changes in belief patterns in response to changes in their environment is particularly interesting.

Technical, but a very interesting take on aboriginal geosophy/philosophy and deemphasis on time.
