A lot of us wish that someone could come along and write stories of sailing ships as great as C.S. Forester's Hornblower books, and I'm sure William P. Mack feels the same way and that was one of the reasons he wrote this book. It shows a fine amount of knowledge and a good level of detail about the workings of the American Navy during the Revolutionary War and about the technical business of building and running the ships. What the book lacks is the fascinating personalities and situations that make the Hornblower stories great.
