Push off from shore and begin a journey down some of the world's greatest rivers. This new series allows readers to explore the river from its source to its mouth, examining the geographical features, people, and industries found along its banks. Environmental threats facing the rivers, as well as the steps being taken to combat them--including wildlife protection--help readers to achieve a deeper understanding of the various characteristics that make up each river.
I don't normally read children's informational literature, but this is the only book I could find at my library that would give a general overview of the history, geography, and tourism along the Rhine River, where I'll be cruising in a few months. While I could have used more depth on multiple topics, it was a great introduction to the river. I loved how the author presented his topic as an imaginary journey, starting at the headwaters high in the Alps, then traveling on different size crafts as we made our way toward the mouth of the river in Belgium. I've jotted down some salient details that I'll take with me on my trip!
