Here is a collection of poems, hymns, stories, and prayers that have stood the test of time and will bring the Christmas spirit into your home during that most holy of seasons.
John Donne was an English poet, preacher and a major representative of the metaphysical poets of the period. His works are notable for their realistic and sensual style and include sonnets, love poetry, religious poems, Latin translations, epigrams, elegies, songs, satires and sermons. His poetry is noted for its vibrancy of language and inventiveness of metaphor, especially as compared to that of his contemporaries.
Despite his great education and poetic talents, he lived in poverty for several years, relying heavily on wealthy friends. In 1615 he became an Anglican priest and, in 1621, was appointed the Dean of St Paul's Cathedral in London.
A beautiful collection of classic Christmas literature that includes religious readings as well as folklore. The sections are divided into six parts: Christmas Expectation; The Nativity; Of Gifts and Giving; A Christmas Carol; Of Lore and Legend; and Christmas Hope. A wonderful book to share or read independently during Advent and the Christmas season.
I have had this book for many years. I bought it because it contained “A Christmas Carol.” This is the first in a long time I have actually read it from beginning to end and not skimmed the contents. I admire it’s holiday content and look forward to it each year.
my mother used to read from this when I was little - lovely to read it again although most of the stories were shorter than I seem to remember them.. oh well.
